1 2/8 Opener What is the chemical equation for titanium (III) oxide?

2 Types of Reactions Synthesis reactions Decomposition reactions Single displacement/replacement reactions Double displacement/replacement reactions Combustion reactions By the end of these notes you should be able to identify each type.

3 Reactant/Product States
s: solid g: gas l:liquid aq: aqueous (mixed w/ water)

4 In your own words define Synthesis.
Example C + O2 O C + O C General: A + B  AB How to Identify: Two + molecules come together to make one (or fewer) product(s)

5 In your own words define decomposition.
Example: NaCl Cl Na Cl + Na General: AB  A + B How to Identify: One molecule breaks into to two or more products.

6 Ex. Decomposition Reaction

7 Single Replacement (SR) Reactions
Definition When 1 atom replaces another atom. How to Identify Look at the reactants! There will be 1 lone element or diatomic molecule interacting with a compound. Ag + MgO  Ag2O + Mg Lone Element Compound

8 Single Replacement (SR) Reactions
How to Predict Products Identify the charges for the reactant ions. The lone element/molecule will replace that atom from the compound that has the same types of charge: cation replaces a cation; anion replaces an anion. Write the correct formulas for the products. Then balance the equation. 2 Ag + 1 MgO  1 Ag2O + 1 Mg Ions: Ag+1 Mg+2 O-2 1 3 2 The silver ion will now bond with the oxygen ion

9 Single Replacement Reactions
Predict the products and balance the following single replacement reaction equation: Zn(s) HCl(aq) 

10 Ex. Single Replacement Reaction

11 Double Replacement (DR) Reactions
Definition When 2 atoms replace each other. How to Identify Look at the reactants! There will be 2 compound interacting. NaC2H3O2 + Al2O3  Na2O + Al(C2H3O2)3 Both reactants are compounds

12 Double Replacement (DR) Reactions
How to Predict Products Identify the charges for the reactant ions. The anion from the first compound will switch places with the anion in the second compound. Write the correct formulas for the products. Then balance the equation. 6 NaC2H3O Al2O3  3 Na2O + 2 Al(C2H3O2)3 Ions: Na+1 C2H3O2-1 Al+3 O-2 The sodium ion will now bond with the oxygen ion The acetate ion will now bond with the aluminum ion 1 2 3

15 Practice Predict the products. HCl(aq) + AgNO3(aq) 
CaCl2(aq) + Na3PO4(aq)  Pb(NO3)2(aq) + BaCl2(aq)  FeCl3(aq) + NaOH(aq)  H2SO4(aq) + NaOH(aq)  KOH(aq) + CuSO4(aq) 

16 State the reaction type, predict products, and balance Mg + CuSO4 
2/28 Opener State the reaction type, predict products, and balance Mg + CuSO4 

17 Combustion (Comb) Reactions
Definition When a hydrocarbon interacts with oxygen gas to produce carbon dioxide and water. How to Identify Look at the reactants! There will be a carbon compound (hydrocarbon) and oxygen gas. CH4 + O2  CO2 + H2O Oxygen gas Hydrocarbon (compound that contains hydrogen & carbon)

18 Combustion (Comb) Reactions
How to Predict Products Identify the reactants as a carbon compound and oxygen gas. Products are always carbon dioxide and water. Then balance the equation. Carbon dioxide 1 CH4 + 2 O2  1 CO2 + 2 H2O Water Oxygen gas Hydrocarbon (compound that contains hydrogen & carbon)

19 Combustion Example C5H O2  CO2 + H2O Write the products and balance the following combustion reaction: C10H O2  8 5 6

20 Mixed Practice State the type, predict the products, & balance.
BaCl2 + H2SO4  C6H12 + O2  Zn + CuSO4  4. Cs + Br2  5. FeCO3 
