3 Russian History - Before Communism
988 Grand Prince Vladimir converts Russia to Christianity Mongol Invasion- Asian invaders from Mongolia led by Genghis Khan - Mongols occupy and rule Russia for more than 200 years Fear of attack from Mongols runs deep in Russian mentality. Russia is a vast land, unprotected by natural barriers.

5 1547 Ivan the Terrible first Russian ruler to take the title “czar” (king). torture and terror are used to remove internal opponents of his absolute rule creates the country’s first secret police (now known as???) Russia suffers from internal disorder and outside invasions 1613 Romanov dynasty begins - dynasty that would last until 1917 when the Bolshevik / Russian Revolution takes place

Catherine the Great She isn’t Russian (German) and isn’t named Catherine ( Sophia Augusta Fredrica ) Russians forgot that she was a total outsider with no rights to the crown Catherine had her husband, Peter the Great, deposed and herself named Empress of Russia.

9 1855 Czar Alexander II Institutes many democratic reforms and frees the surfs (slaves) in 1861 (before Lincoln frees the slaves – 1865). He is assassinated in 1881. 1881 Czar Alexander III Hangs the terrorists responsible for the assassination of his father, and repeals many of his father’s reforms.

10 1894 Czar Nicholas II The last of the Czars. His wife (Alexandra) is influenced by an illiterate “holy man” named Rasputin RASPUTIN CONVINCED ALEXANDRA THAT HE WAS ABLE TO CURE HEMOPHELIA (BLOOD DISORDER – LACK OF CLOTTING ) AND STOP HER SON FROM BLEEDING TO DEATH. Nicholas abdicates (gives up power) in March 1917… he is executed, along with his entire family.

12 ROMANOV RUSSIAN ROYAL FAMILY WAS EXECUTED BY MEMBERS OF THE BOLSHEVIK PARTY.

13 1914 – 1918 THE FIRST WORLD WAR --(WW I - THE GREAT WAR) World War I begins --Germany declares war on Russia October 1917 the Bolshevik Revolution begins
