Bone fractures Content objectives:
Students will learn about bone fractures. Language objectives: Students will be taking notes summarizing bone fractures.

Bone fractures A broken bone, or fracture, happens when excessive force applied to your bone causes it to break or shatter. Some fractures break the bone completely, while others just cause a crack in the bone. There's 6 types of bone fractures greenstick, fissured, comminuted, transverse, oblique, and spiral fracture.

Greenstick fracture A greenstick fracture is a fracture in a young, soft bone in which the bone bends and breaks. Greenstick fractures usually take place during infancy or childhood when a bone is soft.

Fissured fracture A fissured fracture is a long vertical incomplete broken bone.

Comminuted fracture A comminuted fracture is a break or splinter of the bone into more than two fragments. Comminuted fracture is caused swelling and tenderness around the injury and bruising.

Transverse fracture A transverse fracture is when the broken piece of bone is at a right angle to the bone. Transverse fracture causes tenderness, swelling, and possible bruising over the area.

Oblique fracture An oblique fracture is when a bone breaks diagonally.
An oblique fracture is caused by an injury to the bone as the result of a fall, accident, or other trauma.

Spiral fracture A spiral fracture is caused by normal twisting of a bone.

Healing a broken bone First, fibrocartilage fills in between the ends of the broken bone then the cartilaginous callus gets replaced by bone tissue. This happens when the cartilaginous callus breaks down and blood vessels and osteoblasts moves to the affected area and bony callus fills the space. Then the osteoblasts removes any left over bony tissue making a new bone structure just like the original.
