Shelly Baer, LCSW, Joanne Palenzuela, MS, Jairo Arana, LEND Trainee and SALT Graduate OUR MISSION To teach a leadership curriculum to individuals with disabilities so that they can learn strategies to advocate for themselves, others and affect larger systems change. OUR VISION To produce an ever-growing cadre of individuals with the capacity for self-determination, interdependence and the ability to participate in their communities in meaningful ways. “I learned that disability life is not easy for anybody, not just for me, and it’s up to me and to my peers to fight for what we believe in and that’s really important.” Cohort 1 Trainers Cohort 4 Cohort 3 “Project SALT, the Self-Advocacy Leadership Training program, is important because it teaches us people with disabilities how to advocate for ourselves and how to advocate for others with disabilities regardless of the disabilities and it encompasses all disabilities so it allows us to self-advocate and advocate for others.” Communication Skills Problem Solving Skills Disability History/Civil Rights Movement How to become involved in the community Identify Self-Advocacy Organizations or support groups How to serve on boards Knowledge about the legislative process CURRICULUM Create Cadre of Project SALT trainers for sustainability and program expansion Project SALT Funded by DD Council through 2017 NEXT STEPS Project SALT Folds into LEND Program at MCCD Apply for additional funding Department of Pediatrics, Mailman Center for Child Development, University of Miami Leonard M.
