Which is it? Global Warming Global Climate Change
2
Questions to be answered
What is Global Warming? How do Green House gases cause Global Warming? Who/what are producing these gases? What are the effects of Global Warming?
3
What is Global Warming?
4
The sun sends out energy as heat and light.
Some of the sun’s rays get ‘trapped’ in the atmosphere. Some of them get reflected back into space
6
Goldilocks and the Porridge
7
“Goldilocks” amount of greenhouse gases
8
Natural Greenhouse effect Enhanced Greenhouse effect
Atmosphere has more greenhouse gases Heat radiates from the earth Heat radiates from the earth Atmosphere traps some heat Atmosphere traps more heat
9
WHICH GASES TRAP HEAT? ATMOSPHERE CONCENTRATION % Production of Greenhouse gases Greenhouse gases = 1%
10
How do humans increase carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere?
Primarily, by burning fossil fuels which releases the carbon dioxide stored millions of years ago. Deforestation. Less trees means less carbon dioxide can be removed from the atmosphere.
11
How do humans increase methane levels in the atmosphere?
Increased rice growing Methane is produced when bacteria rot organic matter Increased rubbish in landfill Increased livestock farming Methane is also released when fossil fuels are extracted
12
The effects of Global Warming will be Global Climate Change!
…and global climate change will lead to even more loss of biodiversity. Movie: “The Day after tomorrow” Website:

Don’t confuse Ozone layer destruction with Global Warming.
