Job Description Forensic Toxicologist study and perform tests on the bodily fluids and tissues. With using these tests, toxicologist can identify any drugs or chemicals present in the body. Toxicologist will look for any alcohol, illegal or prescription drugs, chemicals, poisons, metals, as well as gases like carbon monoxid for an example. The field of Toxicology has grown to starting to include drug and alcohol testing for all employers and traffic enforcements officials. Toxicologist also do animal testing for samples of wildlife for the criminal investigator and they also test the “date rape” drug. Toxicologist will also perform enhancing substances. Investigators rely on the toxicologist because they have to make reliable conclusions about the impacting specific amount of specific substance that will or could affect a specific individual.

“According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical scientists such as toxicologists was projected to grow 13% from Toxicologists may also be classified as biochemists; the expected growth rate for biochemists, along with biophysicists, was 19% from PayScale.com reports that, as of December 2014, the median annual salary for toxicologists was $79,132,”(Study.com) “Projected Job Growth ( ) 13% for all medical scientists, except epidemiologists; 19% for all biochemists and biophysicists*”(Study.com)

Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages: Toxicology provides good working hours, decent wages, and great benefits. Disadvantages: People who want to be a toxicologist need to have extended education. Sometimes will have long hours in the lab. Limited possibilities for advancements and also there are risks.

Wages and Hours Wages: Toxicologists earn an average of $70,000 per year as a salary. But most toxicologist will earn $55,000 to $81,000 annually. Some could earn a high of $200,000 a year. Those who work with the U.S. Army will get an earning of $71,000 annually. Hours: Some Toxicologist work forty hours a workweek, though some toxicologist have to work more extended hours than forty.

Working Conditions Toxicologist will either work in a team or alone and are usually work in a well equipped labs and offices. Toxicologist often work on researching health considerations that are important. An example is at Poison Control Center, toxicologist may need to find information on the poisonous parties from a product during a life and death situation of an overdose victim. A strict safety precaution is required.

Education and Training
Education: Toxicologist should have at least a bachelor’s degree in either toxicology, chemistry, or biology. Other courses that are helpful are computer science, physics mathematics, and statistics. If someone wants to specialize in toxicology, it’s best if they graduated school and receive their MAster’s or have a Ph.D in toxicology. Training: MOst of the training is done on-the-job. Most toxicologist work with the most experience professionals from either local, state, and federal crime labs. Soon advance their career through the years with hands-on experience. Being part of a internship program can also be another training option. Local and State law enforcement agencies do offer more programs. Same of the emphasied training include Lab procedures and practice overview and toxicology screenings.

Related Occupations Pharmacology: The study of drugs, where they are found, their nature and properties. Pharmacology studies the body’s reaction to drugs. Immunology: Study of the immune system. Viruses, bacteria and parasites that constantly attack the body and can also lead to serious illness. Immunology investigates malfunctions of the immune system.
