3 The System Manors: large farming estates that had small villages
Lords kept 1/3 of the land Peasants farmed the remaining 2/3 land

4 Lifestyles Peasants Nobles
Serfs: Peasants Serfs had a very difficult life: Long hours farming Could not leave Manor without permission Could not afford meat Life expectancy was short due to disease and hunger Born, lived, worked, and died in same Manor Was not a life of luxury or comfort Castle: A fortified base built on a hill

5 Knights Knights: Workers for the Lord
They fight to protect Lord’s assets Trained at a young age in weaponry and chivalry Chivalry: System of rules that dictated knight’s behavior towards others Coat of Arms: Symbol that represented the knight and his personal characteristics

6 The Church (People in charge!)

7 The Church Power Had broad political powers because governments in Europe were so unstable Power was felt all over Europe The Church owned most of the land in Europe Most church leaders were feudal lords

8 Hierarchy - Roles Parish Priest – directly with the people
Performs Baptisms, Marriage, penance, anoints the sick Bishop – chosen by King, oversees Priests Archbishop – oversees Bishops, works with King Cardinals – ambassadors from Pope Pope – Supreme authority of Church

9 Monasticism Monasticism: the way of life in convents (nuns) and monasteries (monks) Christian life = withdraw from life and its temptations

10 Spread of Monastic Influence
3 reasons: Monks and Nuns took care of the needy Most monasteries became rich as nobles gave land and money in return for spiritual favors Monks left their monasteries to spread the gospel as missionaries

11 The Church’s Political/Social Role
War and violence was prohibited in churches and to women, pilgrims, monks/nuns Canon Law: The church’s own code of law and courts Excommunication: Cut off from the church and society Heretics: People who denied the gospel or taught their own gospel Tithe: 1/10 of a person’s income The Church was wealthiest institution in Europe

12 Church believed: Those that labored should be regarded with the dignity of free people Family was a sacred practice and therefore divorces were not allowed!

13 Problems of the Church Nobles appointed their friends as Bishops
Simony: Buying a position in the church People started thinking on their own and were able to read the bible in some cases Period of Inquisition: searching for heretics
