1 Cooking Lab Rules Nutrition & Wellness 2016-17

2 Reminders You don’t follow…you don’t cook.
You aren’t passing with at least a 60% or higher…you don’t cook You don’t do or turn in Knife Skills Lesson…you don’t cook Cooking is a privilege not a guarantee. Cooking is fun and yummy! Cooking is a the “hands-on” test You can do ONE make-up cooking lab at home. I will probably give ONE extra credit homework cooking lab

3 Cooking Lab Rules Wear an apron (Head cook) Keeps your clothes clean
Keeps things on your clothes out of the food

4 Cooking Lab Rules Clean your hands, wrists, forearms with soap and warm water (at least 20 seconds)

5 Cooking Lab Rules Pull back hair if it is longer than chin length
Safer for your hair (flammable) Keeps hair out of food Keep a hair tie in your binder

6 Cooking Lab Rules No sitting during cooking labs. Keep busy
Keep your behinds off of counters and tables

7 Cooking Lab Rules Pay attention to directions: Written Verbal/Spoken

8 Cooking Lab Rules Follow recipe EXACTLY unless you clear it with Ms. Pilant FIRST changes due to allergies or dietary restrictions will be the only ones allowed

9 Cooking Lab Rules 7. Be prepared – plan ahead

10 Cooking Lab Rules Be on time & stay in class Limit passes during labs
You lose points if you are gone Your group will have to cover your duties if you are gone! You will miss the “hands on” test if you are gone I will allow ONE lab to be made up as a homework lab—see Ms. Pilant!

11 Cooking Lab Rules Use the proper equipment in the proper way.
If you are not sure what or how ask your group and if they don’t know ask Ms. Pilant!

12 Cooking Lab Rules Don’t waste water, food, or time!
Don’t leave the water running while doing dishes Be thoughtful when cooking so that you will be able to eat the food you make Try a polite taste of everything If you have leftovers (Ms. Pilant will remind you on labs that usually have leftovers) bring containers and TAKE IT WITH YOU!

13 Cooking Lab Rules Keep noise levels down
We need to be able to hear each other! We don’t need other classes to hear us

14 Cooking Lab Rules Appropriate attire required: Closed toe shoes
Hair ties No loose, flowing things No purses No cell phones

15 Cooking Lab Rules No horseplay. Running, throwing food, stealing food, snapping towels, etc. can equal a ZERO for your lab. You will lose cooking privileges!

16 Cooking Lab Rules Stay in your station until it is time to eat and then go to your tables, sit and eat like civilized human beings. Whenever possible

17 Cooking Lab Rules Clean up at least 10 minutes before class ends.
Everything needs to be clean and put away before you leave There may be a class after yours so you might not be able to stay later You must get a teacher signature for check out to receive credit for cleanup You are being graded on finishing on time

18 Cooking Lab Rules All linens must be walked to the laundry room and put in the washing machine. Pot holders, oven mitts, dish towels, wash cloths, green scrubbies, aprons All scrubbies (green) must be put in the zipped bag that is clipped to the washing machine.

19 Cooking Lab Rules Work cooperatively with your group
Do your assigned duties Help your group members with their duties if they need it Remind your group of tasks that need to be done Part of your grade is a group grade Stay busy!

20 Cooking Lab Rules 2nd Hour
What other rules can you think of: Don’t insult other kitchens Work efficiently Stay with you group Don’t run

21 Cooking Lab Rules 3rd Hour
What other rules can you think of: Only take your portion of food Use knife appropriately Follow all previous No running Don’t start a food fight Pick up your scraps Be respectful of new ideas No screaming Don’t leave your kitchen to bother other people If you break something let Ms. Pilant know Don’t start fires Don’t burn yourself

22 Cooking Lab Rules 4th Hour
What other rules can you think of: Don’t distract other groups No throwing/food fights Be efficient No running Be polite Keep noise levels down Don’t play with hair and stuff Don’t bite

23 Cooking Lab Rules— Ms. Pilant
Other… Only take the ingredients that you need Bring containers for leftovers—there usually are some (sometimes a lot) You need to take a polite taste of all things we cook/demo Use proper taste words (tart vs. gross) Turn in all paperwork on time (that is part of your grade) Honestly reflect on your performance (that’s how we improve) Work efficiently (no dawdling ) Expect a little chaos (especially at first) Have fun! (cooking labs are something to enjoy and the better we follow the rules the more we will have!)
