The Western Undergraduate Exchange, a program designed to reduce tuition levels for students at selected colleges and levels for students at selected colleges and universities in the Western United States. For a full list of schools that participate in W.U.E. please visit

• Choose a reasonable meal plan • Max out on credits each term (be careful with this one!) • Rent textbooks, buy used online • Purchase airline tickets far in advance • Take AP classes and tests • Pay in stages if possible, put on credit card

Very few families actually pay for the FULL “Sticker” price Only a portion of the shared cost has to be paid up front (Deposits, courses)Usually by quarter or semester depending on school Qualifying for Various types of Aid Applying for Scholarships Working Part Time (Less than 20 hours)

11 Managing the Cost of College
Do not just look at the sticker price and think that you can not afford it. Usually private college tuition is more, but they usually have better financial aid packages than public colleges. For example, Brown University meets full demonstrated need of every admitted student. Students with a combined family income profile under $100,000 are not required to take out student loans as part of their financial aid awards. 16 Scholarship Terms Award - An award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement. Awards may be in the form of books, plaques, subscriptions or money. A monetary award is usually called a scholarship or bursary. Scholarship - A non-repayable sum of money awarded to a student to help finance further education. Most scholarships are based on merit in areas ranging from academic achievement to athletics. Usually, scholarships are not based on financial need. Entrance Award/Scholarship - A scholarship or award given to a student entering his/her first year at a post-secondary institution. Also referred to as an Admission Award. In-course Award/Continuing Scholarship - Awarded to students already enrolled in post-secondary studies, beyond the first year level.

19 Scholarship Tips! TOP TEN ADVICE TIPS BY STUDENTS
1. Treat looking for scholarships as if it were your job. Put in the time and you will get paid. 2. Do as many scholarship searches as you can. Finding them is half the battle. 3. Being involved in school, church and community activities are the best ways to make an application stand out. 4. Study hard and get good grades. ACT/SAT scores count. Study at least 80 hours for the test. 5. Treat every scholarship application like a jewel. Make the application perfect. 6. Do some volunteer work. 7. Check all of the local chapters of national organizations. Rotary, Lions, Elks, etc. 8. Pick the right people to write your recommendations. 9. Don’t shy away from scholarships based on difficult essays. If everyone is afraid of them less people apply. 10. Above all, BE HONEST. Don’t lie about finances, grades, work experience, or anything!
