1 Notes: Please run through the first five slides at the beginning of the session – it should take about five to seven minutes. Slide 6 is blank and is a reminder not to click onto the seventh slide until you are ready to do the drop, cover, hold drill at 9.30am. Now is where you might like to switch to your normal presentation. The seventh slide shows the Drop, Cover, Hold sequence. Now is the time to Drop, Cover and Hold. After about seconds, you can get up and advise participants the drill is now over. Slides 8 through 10 should be shown following the drill and provide additional information to participants. Thank you for taking part in this earthquake drill.

2 It’s almost time to ShakeOut
During this lecture, tutorial or staff meeting we will be conducting an exercise drill. When you see the following image, it is time to Drop, Cover and Hold.

3 About the ShakeOut Massey University encourages everyone to take part in this earthquake drill as a way of becoming better prepared to respond to an earthquake; however, participation is not compulsory. If you are not comfortable taking part in this earthquake drill for any reason, you may choose not to, and may leave the room before the drill, which take place at 9.30am.

4 Support services Events – including fire or earthquake drills – may trigger unexpectedly strong emotions in some people. These reactions are a completely normal response to an abnormal event! If you would like support to deal with any emotions or experiences you may have, please contact one of the Massey’s support services: Student health and counselling services Chaplaincy or religious services Employee Assistance Programme (EAP; for staff only)

5 What is Drop, Cover, Hold? The following videos show you how to drop, cover and hold in the event of an earthquake: What is Drop, Cover and Hold? Drop, Cover and Hold is the easiest and best way to protect yourself if you are in the home, workplace or outside during an earthquake. Take shelter as quickly as possible wherever you are. If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, then Drop, Cover and Hold to protect yourself from falling objects. Stay indoors till the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. In most buildings in New Zealand you are safer if you stay where you are until the shaking stops. Not all people may be able to easily drop. If you are unable to drop the best action is to stop moving and brace yourself against a wall or furniture. If you are outside, move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then Drop, Cover and Hold. Stay there until the shaking stops. If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops proceed with caution and avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged.

7 Drop, Cover and Hold as close to 9. 30am as possible
Drop, Cover and Hold as close to 9.30am as possible. This is voluntary, but we encourage people to participate if they can.

8 Consider what happens next?
Have you and your family, or flatmates: A household emergency plan? A supply of emergency food and survival items? Agreed on a place to meet if you couldn’t contact anyone by phone, or other methods? Agreed who would pick up your kids from school (if applicable)? Considered pets and how to look after them in an emergency? Met your neighbours?

9 Emergency preparedness at Massey
Information and tips on how to get better prepared for an emergency is available here: and The Massey website and Facebook page will be the key places to find information in an emergency:
