Introduction to Organ Systems

Respiratory System Lungs breathe in oxygen, and breathes out carbon dioxide from cells. Uses blood vessels to carry the O2 and CO2 between cells and lungs.

Circulatory System Takes oxygen (from the lungs) and food nutrients to every cell in the body. Removes carbon dioxide and other cell waste. Blood vessels are the highways that end at every cell.

Nervous System Brain and spinal cord relay messages to all parts of the body. Controls all the major organs. Allows for our five senses: Sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste.

Digestive System Digests food nutrients into very small particles.
Small intestines absorbs the food nutrients into our blood vessels. Blood vessels carry the nutrients to our cells.

Excretory System Kidneys clean the blood, and turn the waste into urine. Lungs get rid of carbon dioxide.

Muscular System Muscles attach to our bones, to help move our skeleton.

Skeletal System Bones protect our organs, and help us stand upright.
Bones store calcium, and make blood.

Reproductive System The process that continues life on earth.
Hormones from the endocrine system help control male and female reproduction.

Immune System A group of defenses that protects the body against disease-causing organisms.

Endocrine System A system of glands that uses hormones to control many
parts of your body. Hormones are chemical messengers that tell your body to do certain things. **(not in new Coach book)

Skin Skin is the largest organ of your body.
Skin is the first defense against the outside world. Sensory response- We feel our environment using nerves in our skin. **(Not in new Coach book)

The following is an example of how the circulatory and respiratory system work together.

O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 Body Cells CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2

O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 Body Cells CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2

Zooming In....

CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 O2 O2 O2

CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 O2 CO2 O2 O2 O2

Blood travels through the body and ends up in a capillary!

move through capillaries
Red Blood Cells move through capillaries one at a time! Artery Vein Body Cells

Now the O2 gets off, and the CO2 gets on!

CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 CO2 CO2

CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 CO2 CO2

CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 CO2 CO2

CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 CO2 CO2

CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 CO2 CO2 CO2

The CO2 goes back to the lungs where it gets breathed out!

Working Together The Circulatory and Respiratory System work together to give Oxygen to all our body cells, and to get rid of Carbon Dioxide.
