1 National Environmental Policy Act of 1969

2 Main purposes: NEPA's basic policy is ensure that all branches of government take the environment into consideration before passing any laws or policies that may significantly affects the environment. NEPA requirements come into play when airports, buildings, military complexes, highways, parkland purchases and other federal activities are proposed. Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements are required from all Federal agencies and are a big part of NEPA requirements. NEPA requirements apply to all federal agencies in the executive branch, but do not apply to Congress, the Federal court or the president

3 Its three sections: NEPA contains three important sections: 1.The declaration of national environmental policies and goals. 2.The establishment of provisions for federal agencies to enforce those policies and goals. 3.The establishment of a Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) in the Executive Office of the President. Draft Year: proposed by Henry M. Jackson on February 18, 1969 Enacted by the 91st US congress Effective Jan and signed by president Nixon Agency/Group Responsible for Regulation and Enforcement:EPA

4 The purpose as stated in the preamble reads:
"To declare national policy which will encourage productive and enjoyable harmony between man and his environment; to promote efforts which will prevent or eliminate damage to the environment and biosphere and stimulate the health and welfare of man; to enrich the understanding of the ecological systems and natural resources important to the Nation..."
