Hemopoiesis By: Patience, Emma, Anne, Katie, & Megan

2 What is hemopoiesis? the production of blood cells and platelets, which occurs in the bone marrow

3 What happens if this fails?
Blood cells only live days, therefor when blood cells are not made a cause may be anemia. Anemia is the condition in which you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to your tissues. This can cause fatigue, heart problems, heart failure, and death.

4 What happens if this fails?
When hemopoiesis is producing too much blood cells, a person can experience hemochromatosis. Hemochromatosis is a disorder in which there is too much iron in the body. This can cause brown skin, diabetes mellitus, cirrhosis of the liver, arthritis, heart failure, and sexual dysfunction.

5 What happens if this fails?
If the blood doesn’t clot, the result is often times hemophilia. Hemophilia is the condition in which the sufferer will bleed severely due from even slight injury.

6 Question: Mrs. Smith has advanced bone cancer. As the disease progressed, Mrs. Smith required several blood transfusions throughout her therapy. Why? How do the blood cells get out?
