British invade USA, burning Washington, DC to the ground For a long time it was tie. After peace treaty signed, Andrew Jackson beat British invasion at Battle of New Orleans

5 Dartmouth v. Woodward British made contract with Dartmouth College
New Hampshire tries to change the contract later Supreme Court said government cannot violate contracts Makes USA safe for businesses to grow Contract: A legally binding agreement to do business Think: Why might a contract help encourage business? Think: What effect did this have on the USA?

6 McCullouch v. Maryland Does the national government have the power to set up a bank? It’s not in the Constitution But, if you read between the lines, you can argue that one is needed for the government to do it’s job. Think: Is this a good enough argument to make it constitutional? Why or why not?
