Skilling students for the future through careers education and vocational pathways
$43.8 million - $14.9 million ongoing Navigator program

More information will be provided in the coming months about the resources and support that will be available to translate these initiatives into better outcomes for school students

3. Navigator
$43.8 million to reduce secondary school dropout rates through the Navigator program
Navigator is currently delivered in eight DET Areas. The program is fully subscribed, with waitlists in each of the eight pilot Areas.
As at December 2017: 1038 young people had received case management support, and 691 returned to education.
Budget provided an additional $43.8 million to (and $14.9 million ongoing) to continue and expand the program statewide.
Expansion will be phased over three years from 2019 – 2021.
Plus $450,000 additional resourcing to specifically target priority cohorts (with a focus on youth offending) in high risk Areas.

4. Expanding career choices
$108.6 million and $26.7 million ongoing - Key reforms include:
Career Exploration workshops for Year 7 and 8 students to understand their interests, strengths and aspirations
Career e-Portfolios for Year 9 students supported by professional career diagnostic assessment and guidance
Career counselling and Career Action Plans for Year 10 to 12 students
School-industry roundtables and industry activities particularly for disadvantaged students and those in rural / regional areas
Training for over 400 careers practitioners in the Graduate Certificate in Career Education so that every government school has at least one qualified careers practitioner
Rebadging Managed Individual Pathways funding to Career Education Funding to deliver expanded and enhanced career education services to all students

5. Start a trade at school and graduate ready for work – new Head Start Apprenticeships and Traineeships
$49.8 million to create a new School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship model
More flexible model that will transform career education and strengthen vocational pathways in secondary schools and beyond into high quality apprenticeships, traineeships and VET programs
Head Start provides a new model for school-based apprenticeships and traineeships and will deliver an estimated 1,700 apprenticeships and traineeships in 100 secondary schools over the next four years, starting from 2019
Initial focus in 2019 is priority industries such as construction, health care and social assistance
Additional local Enterprise apprenticeships and traineeships will be developed from the start of 2020.

6. Vocational Pathways
$9.14 million over four years to top up VET Targeted Funding
To support the predicted ten per cent growth in senior secondary VET enrolments from 2018
$14.6 million over four years for government schools that choose TAFE to deliver VET programs on the Skills First List
To improve the supply in courses that are high cost, high priority and lead to better job outcomes
$2.1 million over four years to develop a quality framework and website for VET delivered to school students
