1 Shape, space and measure prompts
This is a useful prompt to ensure that shape, space and measure is covered and taught effectively towards the month age band.

2 Shape, space and measure
Demonstrate the correct mathematical vocabulary when interacting with the children e.g. corners, 2D, 3D, big and small. The children will soon pick this up and become to understand the meaning. Provide weekly adult led or carpet sessions to discuss and explore shape, space and measure. Use tactile shapes to engage all learners and ensure children understand the meaning of numbers through questioning. Provide lots of opportunities for children to sort, compare and talk about objects e.g. can you put the shoes in their correct air? Can you sort out the animals in the correct place? This will engage the learner and create opportunities for them to solve their own problems. Shape, space and measure • Shows an interest in shape and space by playing with shapes or making arrangements with objects. • Shows awareness of similarities of shapes in the environment. • Uses positional language. • Shows interest in shape by sustained construction activity or by talking about shapes or arrangements. • Shows interest in shapes in the environment. • Uses shapes appropriately for tasks. • Beginning to talk about the shapes of everyday objects, e.g. ‘round’ and ‘tall’.
