1 Case Study: Esperanza Rising
Module 1 Unit 2 Lesson 3 Inferring About Characters Based on How They Respond to Challenges: Chapter 3 – Las Papayas/ Papayas

2 Learning Targets I can answer text-dependent questions with evidence to support my ideas in class discussion. I can identify situations in Esperanza Rising where a character’s human rights are challenged. I can make inferences from the text about Esperanza, Mama, and Abuelita and write to explain my thinking about the characters.

3 Revisiting Papa’s Death (Page 22-23)
Listen to the end of Chapter 2 and the beginning of Chapter 3. At the end of Chapter 2, what does it mean that Esperanza “sank into a dark hole of despair and disbelief?” At the start of Chapter 3, what does Esperanza dream about? 23:00 – 24:58

4 Revisiting Papa’s Death (Page 22-23)
On page 23, it says, “Then the events of last night wrenched her mind into reality.” What does the word wrenched mean? On page 23, it says, “Her smile faded, her chest tightened, and a heavy blanket of anguish smothered her smallest joy.” Is she really wearing a blanket? What does the word anguish mean? 23:00 – 24:58… Go over Vocabulary after this slide?

5 Challenges to Human Rights in Chapter 3
As we listen to the rest of Chapter 3, use your evidence flags to answer these questions: What challenges did the characters in this chapter face? Where are there examples specifically of human rights challenges? 24:58 – 42:41

6 How Characters Respond to Challenges
The way people respond to challenges tells us a lot about who they are. Throughout our study of Esperanza Rising, we will be thinking about the challenges Esperanza and other characters face, how those characters respond, and what that tells us about those characters.

7 How Characters Respond to Challenges
In groups of 3, each person will focus on one member of Esperanza’s family and answer the following questions: 1. Esperanza: How is Esperanza responding to her father’s death? Read Page 25, the paragraph that begins “She took a quivery breath…” Pages 27 – 28 What other evidence can you find in Chapter 3 that shows how Esperanza is responding? 2. Mama: How is Mama responding to her husband’s death? Read Page 27, the paragraph that begins “Esperanza avoided opening her birthday gifts…” Pages 30 – 31 3. Abuelita: How does Abuelita respond to Esperanza’s uncles? Read Page 32 Near the bottom of the page, why does Abuelita call the uncles “vultures”?

8 Novel Study 1. What did Papa leave Esperanza and her mother in the will? What did he leave Tio Luis? Why is this situation a problem? 2. What offer does Tio Luis make to Esperanza’s mother to fix the problem and how does she respond to his offer? 4. Miguel mentions to Esperanza that they may be leaving for the United States now that it seems likely Tio Luis will be taking over the ranch. Why would his family want to leave Mexico? If there is time! If not, Homework?
