1 6B12 Observe Natural Resources

2 B12 Background Earth has many kinds of resources.
We use a lot of materials that are found naturally on earth, such as: Wood like oak Metals like iron Minerals like diamond

3 B12 Vocabulary Natural Resources Mineral Magma Fossil
Materials found on earth and used by people Mineral Non-living material found naturally on earth Magma Hot melted rock Found deep inside the earth Fossil Living remains found in rock

4 B12 Challenge Questions 1. Why are there so many kinds of rocks?
Many sources and raw materials 2. Where do they come from? Volcano, underwater, underground 3. What are they made of? Sand, silt, clay, minerals, fossils 4. What makes some of them so valuable? Rare, mineral is in demand (gold, diamond)

5 B12 Resource Table (make on next blank lab page)
Resource Name Observations Value Rank 1-4 Rank Reasons Name Draw & Color Color= Transmit= Luster= Crystal size= Weight= Use= Hard or Soft= More= 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 Why?

6 B12 Observations Should Include:
Color=black coal, green fluorite, red granite, or white/pink limestone Transmit=opaque, translucent, transparent Luster=brilliant, glassy, dull Crystal size=small · or large • Weight=heavy or light Use=what it is, or could be, used for Hard or soft Anything else you observe Report results to me and return all items

7 B12 Rank Procedure On blank lab book page put:
Name, Hour, Date B12 Natural Resource Ranking Make a big 4 column table with 5 rows. Title columns Resource Name, Observations, Value Ranking (hi1-4), Reasons for Ranking B=coal, W=limestone, G=fluorite, R=granite Examine resources and discuss observations and rank order of each item with your group

11 B12 Resource Analysis: Date___ Name__________________ Hr_
Explain in 1 paragraph each: Does color always help identify a material According to the class, what were the most & least valuable resources? Why? Explain what else you would need to know about these natural resources to help you determine their value? Explain how an item’s value can change.
