Rise in feminism- women and men should be socially, politically, and economically equal National Organization for Women (NOW)- women’s rights organization Equal Rights Amendment- proposed to Constitution to promise equal treatment for men and women in all spheres of life, needed 38 states to ratify, fell 3 short.

3 Roe V. Wade Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal Voted 7-2
Stated that it violated privacy rights Women have a right to protect their body

4 American Indian Movement (AIM)
Started in 1968 Promoted traditional cultures and economic independence of Native Americans Better education for Indian children Wounded Knee Incident- 1973

5 Cesar Chavez and Latino Movement
Chavez grew up a farmer, but became an activist for Latino worker rights Co-founded the National Farm Workers Association Led farmer strikes to increase pay

6 Counterculture & Hippies
Based on peace & love and fighting “the system” College campus demonstrations Increase in drug use: LSD & marijuana Hippie communities, lacked resources
