1 Franklin Delano Roosevelt and The New Deal
Democratic Governor of New York during Hoover’s Presidency Campaigned on the promise of a “new deal” for the American people. “Try anything, but try something.”

-Provide aid to people in the immediacy (short term) -Get the economy up and running again (intermediate) -Fix “the system” so this never happens again (long term)

Agricultural Sector Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) -paid land owners not to farm, or to destroy already existing farm products -waste during times of near starvation Problems: -eviction of tenant farmers and sharecroppers - Favored corporate agriculture at the expense of small farms

Industrial Sector National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) -government/business cooperation to set prices and production levels -favored big business over small business Supreme Court declared BOTH the AAA and NIRA unconstitutional in 1935 & 1936.
