Richard Kleindeinst resign, John Dean is fired #3 May 17 – Senate Committee hearings start May 18 – Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox appointed by new Attorney General Eliot Richardson July – Existence of secret Oval Office tapes revealed - Cox subpoenas nine tapes, but Nixon’s lawyers claim “executive privilege” and delay release for approx. one year (Oct. 10 – Agnew resigns) Oct. 20 – “Saturday Night Massacre” #4 (Dec. 6 – Gerald Ford sworn in as V.P.)

Still, public sees a shallow and mean-spirited side of Nixon in transcripts July – Supreme Court orders release of tapes - Impeachment hearings begin in the House of Reps. Charges: 1. Obstruction of Justice 2. Misuse of federal agencies 3. Withholding of info from Judiciary Comm. Aug. 5 – Conversations with Haldeman made public… clear that Pres. knew merely days after the break-in Aug. 8 – Nixon resigned, effective the next day #5 Aug. 9 – Gerald Ford inaugurated Sept. 8 – Ford grants full pardon to Nixon
