2 What Is A PAC? Political Action Committee - committee that donates money to a candidate and political party How much can they donate? $5,000 per candidate, per election (1 for primary, 1 for the general election) $15,000 per party Individuals CANNOT donate more than $5,000 to a PAC per year Who do PACs donate money to? Candidates that are favorable to their issues How are PACs formed? Must be registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC - created in 1976)

3 Why Are PACs So Popular? Campaigns are expensive
Over $1,000,000 for a House seat PACs support members of Congress on important committees PACs help offset campaign costs Examples of PACs? National Association of Realtors Airline Pilots Association National Rifle Association Each of the above has donated millions in past elections

4 The Influence Of PACs Do PACs “buy” legislation? Legally - no
Again, PACs tend to support candidates that are receptive to their views Many complain that PACs have too much influence Presidential Election of 2016 Where are PACs most influential? House elections Presidential elections are too expensive for a single PAC to have any influence

5 SUPER-PACs What are they?
Created in 2010, out of the Supreme Court case Citizens United How are they different from a PAC? They cannot be associated with a particular political candidate Controversy over Super-PACs? Some argue there is too much $ and influence in campaigns When people talk about campaign finance reform, it’s usually about Super-PACs
