1 Marie-Françoise SARON ISTC Senior Project Manager
EU-RUSSIA Symposium on S&T Co-operation in Biotechnology & Partnering event CONTRIBUTION TO FOOD BIOTECHNOLOGY AND SAFETY IN RUSSIAN FEDERATION AND COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES THROUGH THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER Marie-Françoise SARON ISTC Senior Project Manager

2 History of International Science and Technology Centre
Founded in 1992 by the governments of the EU, Japan, the USA and Russia; Canada jointed recently Operations began in 1994 in Moscow ISTC then Ukraine STCU - Activities concern 8 countries of the Commonwealth Independent States plus Ukraine ISTC and STCU are tow sisters oganizations

3 ISTC/STCU Core objectives
Redirect former MDW scientists Promote sustainability Reinforce the transition to the market economy

4 ISTC funding systems Collaborators Governmental (funding parties) :
Japan, Korea, Norway, Canada, EU, USA Collaborators To know : Private or public collaborators from the side of one or more parties are expected to help targeting the project. To do : Collaborators follow the progress of the project and ensure that results will find applications in real problems of basic and/or applied research. To notice : Collaborators neither receive nor necessarily contribute to any funding. If agreed … send a letter to ISTC to support your chosen proposal Partners : Inter or governmental, non-governmental institutes, private companies

5 ISTC Services Support and Sustainability Activities
Commercialization Support program Competence Building Workshops : EU, Japan, USA Travel Grants Technologies Database Patenting support, etc. Foreign collaborators

6 ISTC 10 years of accomplishment
PROLIFIC > 58,000 scientists engaged >10,000 from RF and CIS 100 institutes > USD 660 Mill. > 2000 projects UNIQUE 37 nations engaged in cooperative technology development, and growing efforts of working toward nonproliferation and greater world security. RESPECTED Intergovernmental organization with status of diplomatic mission CLEAN Legal, audited, effective, & transparent mechanism

7 Benefits for ISTC participants
On-site maintainance Travel and training facilities Equipment, consommables and salaries : all tax-free

8 Benefits for foreign private or public collaborators
- Exchange of ideas and expertise with high-level scientists and engineers; - Early access to the results - Potential partnership in any future commercialisation of results; - On-site monitoring performed by secretariat Foreign participants are from the side of one or more funding parties Scientists and engineers from the RF, Ukraine and other CIS countries - Joint participation in experiments at unique installations and facilities

9 Benefits for partners Facilitated contacts through ISTC and STCU with high-level scientists and engineers Assistance in Intellectual Property Rights issues; Commercial confidentiality; Tax-free expenses; Financial audits; On-site monitoring.
