They appear in your laboratory activities They will alert you to possible dangers They will remind you to work carefully

4 Know the safety hazards of each experiment before starting.

In case of emergency in which a chemical goes into one’s eye, use the eyewash station Flush in water for 15 mins. and notify the teacher

8 Protect Yourself Proper Attire
Keep all long hair tied back Do not wear loose clothing that could catch on fire

9 Know the locations and operating instructions for the fire extinguishers, fire blankets, fire alarms, fire hoses, first aid kit, eye washes and showers. Wash eyes for at least 15 minutes.

If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes Wash hands after every lab Handle glassware, sharp tools and heated containers carefully

Heated metal and glass looks cool, use tongs or gloves before handling Do not place hot glassware directly on lab desk or in cold water

14 Keep burners in the middle of the lab table, not on the edge
Keep burners in the middle of the lab table, not on the edge. When heating liquids in test tubes, never point the tube toward yourself or anyone else. Never heat the test tube directly at the bottom but tilt the tube and heat it gently between the bottom of the tube and the top of the liquid. Use boiling chips when boiling liquids in a flask or beaker to prevent bumping.

15 Keep tabletops clean. Return all equipment to its original location before leaving the lab. Clean all spills immediately.

Never return chemicals to bottles of their origin. If you have excess, give it to another student or throw it away. Check labels on containers twice to make sure you use the right chemical and of the correct concentration. Dispose of chemicals in proper receptacle.

24 You Should Never… Never put anything in your mouth while in the lab (including chemicals, solutions, equipment, cigarettes, food, drink, or gum). Put all food and drinks in your bag.

25 In case of an emergency…
Know the locations of: fire extinguisher fire blanket body shower eyewash station first aid kit If you spill a harmful chemical on yourself or in your eyes, start rinsing immediately and send your partner to get teacher’s help

26 Remember to… Stay at your work station Maintain a clean work area
Read and follow all directions Report any spills, accidents, or injury to the teacher immediately Clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period Dispose of waste products according to instruction

Smell chemicals only if your teacher specifically tells you to do so, then use your hand to fan the vapor to your nose.

Use a rubber suction bulb or other device to fill a pipet.

Read and reread labels carefully to make sure that you are using the right chemical. Pay attention to the warnings about the chemicals used in the lab.

Careless behavior may endanger yourself and others and will not be tolerated!

Dispose of all waste materials according to your instructional procedure or your teacher’s instructions ? ? ? ?

37 Report any accidents or unsafe conditions immediately!
