Tests of Evidence
2
Sometimes a debate comes down to a comparison of the strength of each side’s grounds.
Not just a matter of having more evidence, but having better quality evidence. Thus, we test to allow us to compare the quality of competing evidence.
3
Accuracy Relevancy Sufficiency Verifiability Recency
4
Accuracy Begin by directly quoting evidence during the research process and/or in your speech, rather than paraphrasing it in any subjective sense.
5
Relevancy Make sure the evidence clearly relates to the claim to which it is being applied. Make sure the grounds/evidence directly support your claim. Phrase your claim properly in order to find the right evidence. If your topic is confined by state borders, then nationwide statistics would not be as relevant.
6
Sufficiency Is the evidence sufficient to prove the claim that you’re trying to make? Does it meet your burden of proof? Don’t exaggerate the impact of the available evidence. Your claim should say no more than you can prove.
7
Verifiability Can you confirm your findings with more than one source?
Does the field of opinion show some coherent point of view, or are you basing your claim on an exceptional case or a single perception? To verify, read a wide variety of individual sources on the subject. 10 different authors spread across various publications.
8
Recency Your opponent might demonstrate that your viewpoint or evidence is obsolete. Recency builds credibility Ask: Are the original figures/statistics accurate? Are the statistics representative? What were the characteristics of the sample population? Who did they sample? Where? Under what conditions? Was the number sampled sufficient? If you’re combining or comparing different statistics, are they working with similar definitions of the field of study? Are the units compared really alike?
