2 Heat Exchangers A heat exchanger is used to exchange heat between two fluids of different temperatures, which are separated by a solid wall. Heat exchangers are used to carry out energy conversion and utilization. They utlize a wide range of flow configurations. Applications in heating and air conditioning, power production, waste heat recovery, chemical processing, food processing, sterilization in bio-processes. Heat exchangers are classified according to flow arrangement and type of construction.

6 2. Compact Heat exchangers Designed to realize large heat transfer area per unit volume (area density) HEX with area density >700 m2/m3 is called compact. Examples of compact HEX are: car radiators and Human lungs.

9 3. Shell and tube HEX The most commonly used type of HEXs in industrial applications. It contains large number of tubes enclosed inside a shell. One fluid flows inside the tubes while the other is flowing outside the tubes (inside the shell)

13 4. Plate and Frame HEX It consists of a series of plates with corrugated flat flow passages. The hot and cold fluids flow in alternate passages. suitable for fluids at the same pressure.
