2 Through effective adoption of open educational resources (OER).
Team of educators, learning scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs Based in Portland, OR 150+ institutional clients 167K students & $15M+ in textbook savings in 2017 Lumen’s Purpose Make great learning opportunities available to all students, regardless of socioeconomic background. Through effective adoption of open educational resources (OER). Facts What is Lumen? Lumen originated with a 2011 grant project funded by the Gates Foundation to tackle the challenge of how to make open educational resources a viable content option to serve disadvantaged learners in higher education. Lumen’s founders collaborated with eight colleges and universities to replace traditional textbooks with open resources in eight different courses and measure the impacts on cost savings, student success, and faculty support for using OER. The results were phenomenal: Grant funding allowed the cost to students to drop to zero, and the improvements in passing rates averaged five to ten percent higher than sections using traditional publisher materials. Lumen’s founders realized they were onto something. The company was founded in Today the Lumen team supports 150+ colleges and universities across the US. Over 125,000 students saved nearly $12 million last year, using Lumen course materials instead of expensive textbooks. Lumen continues to use OER to develop great course materials, and its focus has shifted beyond just affordability and access to also address student success improvements and learning design to help students thrive in Lumen-supported courses.

3 5Rs: Retain Reuse Revise Remix Redistribute
Open educational resources (OER) are resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others. 5Rs: Retain Reuse Revise Remix Redistribute We use the original Hewlett Foundation definition for OER. Open Educational Resources (OER) are learning materials that reside in the public domain, or are licensed to allow them to be freely used and repurposed by others. OER frequently are published using Creative Commons licenses. This licensing allows others to use this content in unique and important ways for educational purposes - what we refer to as the 5Rs: Reuse, Revise, Remix, Redistribute, Retain.

4 Key benefits using Lumen-supported OER
Affordability: Cost savings for students Access: Day one access to course materials Ownership: Maintain a copy after course ends Editability: Make changes to content Control: Greater academic freedom for faculty Success: Passing rates and retention improve Why OER? Key benefits using Lumen-supported OER Common benefits of OER include affordability and access for students, as well as greater freedom and control over educational content for faculty members.

5 OER, like sunlight, is a public good. Lumen does for OER what
solar companies do for sunlight: Harness OER to power student learning. Photo by American Public Power Association on Unsplash Lumen often gets the question: if OER materials are free, why is there a cost? David Wiley, Lumen’s co-founder provides this analogy: Like sunlight, OER is a public good. In the same way a solar company’s products and services help you harness sunlight to power your home, Lumen helps faculty members and institutions harness OER to student learning. Lumen provides technology, tools, and support that make OER a reliable, effective choice for your faculty and students.

7 Symptoms of a broken model
Source: Florida Virtual Campus 2016 Student Textbook & Course Materials Survey Research tells us students and education suffer when students can’t afford textbooks. What is no surprise to instructors today is the fact that two-thirds of students go without textbooks at some point due to cost. Additionally, students drop courses, earn poorer grades and take fewer courses due to the high cost of textbooks.

8 of all community college students graduate in six years
38% of all community college students graduate in six years For many, the barriers are simply too great, and many students are falling out of the education system and the opportunities for socio-economic progress it provides. Just 38% of all community college students graduate within six years. Source: American Association of Community Colleges, “Trends in Community College Enrollment and Completion Data”

9 800% increase in the cost of textbooks since % increase since 1970. The cost of textbooks is a big part of the problem. About ¼ of in-state tuition (4-year), ¾ of community college tuition. The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) estimates that the cost of textbooks is comparable to 26% of in-state tuition at public universities and 72% at community colleges – up over 800% over the past three decades. Students literally drop out of post-secondary programs because of the cost of textbooks, while others simply forego purchasing required textbooks and suffer the academic consequences. In addition to negatively impacting individual students, the high costs and strict copyrights of educational materials slow the pace of educational innovation and experimentation.

10 Lumen OER improves student success.
Students perform as well or better in sections using OER. There is a strong body of evidence showing students in courses using OER perform as well or better as their peers in sections using traditional publisher textbooks.

11 Learning Design OER Content
How Lumen invests in OER Learning Design OER Content Seeking impact beyond affordability, Lumen delivers OER engineered to enable student success. Technology (w/LMS) Lumen’s courses are comprised of three components: 1) Every course contains curated OER content including text, videos, interactives, and assessments, all tailored to fit the course requirements. Lumen regularly updates course content to ensure it remains current, and to improve the quality of the learning experience. Lumen also maintains accurate licensing and attributions, removing a huge headache for anyone using and customizing OER. 2) Lumen puts tremendous effort into the learning design around each course. A Lumen course is much more than just a collection of OERs. These courses start with a comprehensive set of learning outcomes. Lumen course designers and subject matter experts align and organize curated content to fit the learning outcomes. They design interactive learning activities, machine-graded and human-graded assessments to help students develop their skills, receive feedback on their progress through the course, and ultimately demonstrate mastery. The Lumen team uses learning data to understand where students are struggling, and to make targeted updates to content, assessments, and other learning activities to improve student success. Lumen also invests in accessibility to ensure courses meet the needs of students with differing abilities. 3) Lumen also invests in technology to make using OER simple, seamless, and well-supported. Lumen courses integrate into the institution’s LMS (Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, and Moodle), providing a unified user experience for your students and faculty. Lumen technology enables course customization and editing, giving faculty members much greater control over the learning content they use with their students. Lumen provides powerful but easy-to-use personalized learning tools to help instructors identify and reach struggling students. For quantitative courses, Lumen offers a flexible OER online homework system, allowing you to tailor assessments to your students’ specific needs. Wrapped around all elements of any Lumen course is our great customer service, as we work shoulder-to-shoulder with your team to ensure your success with OER. Customer Support

16 Waymaker’s automated messages change student behaviors
Learner Impact Waymaker’s automated messages change student behaviors Waymaker invites faculty members to set up automated messages that go out to students at appropriate moments to provide helpful guidance and encouragement about what they can do to improve their performance. This is an actual message exchange during fall term 2016 in a Waymaker Macroeconomics course. Waymaker sent an automated message from the faculty member to a student when they scored poorly on a quiz. Here you can see the huge difference it made for the student to receive that nudge and make better choices about their learning. This is the power of Waymaker.

17 Waymaker courses show increased persistence and passing rates
Learner Impact Waymaker courses show increased persistence and passing rates These are the results we see in Waymaker courses. In this research, we found significantly fewer students drop courses - a difference of 24%. About the same number withdraw and pass with a C or better. This means Waymaker courses are keeping more students in class who would otherwise have dropped the course. We can assume many of those probably would earn somewhat lower grades, which explains the comparable passing rates between using or not using Waymaker. With Waymaker we’re keeping more students in the course and they’re getting through it successfully.

18 Waymaker can erase performance gaps for disadvantaged learners
Learner Impact Waymaker can erase performance gaps for disadvantaged learners In Waymaker courses we’ve been able to close the gap between Pell-eligible students and their wealthier peers.

19 Assessing and improving Lumen courses
Lumen performs consistent analysis of the learning outcomes data, for their curated courses. In response to the analysis, and faculty feedback, Lumen implements changes to the identified areas, utilizing learning science to improve the course, and continually increase student success.
