1 IEEE: 2013…and Beyond R9 Meeting Mexico City, Mexico 12 April 2012
Peter W. Staecker 2012 IEEE President-Elect

2 Topics for today IEEE: preliminaries
Priorities of the Board of Directors Strategy I am here to learn, not to lecture 11/11/2018

3 IEEE Vision Be essential to the global technical community and to technical professionals everywhere, and… Be universally recognized for the contributions of technology and of technical professionals in improving global conditions We believe in collaboration and leveraging the power of one IEEE We strive for excellence in everything we do We align with global trends We aim for simplicity We focus for maximum impact Be essential to the global technical community and to technical professionals everywhere, and be universally recognized for the contributions of technology and of technical professionals in improving global conditions. Be relevant

4 IEEE Membership By Region 31 December 2011
R1 to 6 – 207,096 Updated with MGA’s numbers from year-end 2011. Members make up only 7% of the potential member market of engineers and other technologists in IEEE’s fields of interest. So, there is great opportunity for continued and more rapid growth, especially with the flexible dues structure for emerging countries. Retention of students in their first 5 years after graduation has become a key focus of IEEE as the total numbers of student members continues to rise. R10 – 97,393 R8 – 76,322 R9 – 18,235 TOTAL MEMBERSHIP – 415,989 5

5 Observations… Membership continues to grow
Growth strongest in Regions 8-10 Geographic diversity, volunteer availability/participation are key strengths 6

6 IEEE and Region 9 Growing engagement with organizations, universities, members throughout the Region Rapid growth at local level; thus far in 2012… 11 new Society Chapters formed 6 new Student Branches formed 3 new WIE affinity groups formed Sections in Mexico and Columbia leading these efforts Mexico’s members are responsible for 8 new Society chapters, WIE affinity groups, and Student Branches. Colombia’s members are responsible for 6 new Society chapters, WIE affinity groups, and Student Branches.

7 Membership, while important, is not the only key to IEEE’s future
Products, services, intelligent proactive evolution will be determining factors as well. But from members, come … 11/11/2018

8 …IEEE Volunteers Key to IEEE’s success
About 40,000 individuals serving the organization, in roles such as… Local Section Chair Associate editor of a Journal, etc The volunteer effort is substantial From the President/CEO to local Section Chairs, major decisions are made by volunteers And the partnership with staff and members is important Pros/Cons of volunteer model: adds valuable diversity of thought, but suffers from rapid turnover in population. 9

9 Topics for today IEEE: preliminaries
Priorities of the Board of Directors Strategy 11/11/2018

10 IEEE: a Source of Technical Knowledge
Current relevance is rooted in IEEE being technically pertinent Most successful when our fields of interest are important, economically and socially Ability to adapt, expand into and— most importantly—become the leader in new technical fields is critical to IEEE’s future relevance 11

11 Priorities of the IEEE BoD
One year in extent, renewable From Moshe Kam, to Gordon Day, to Peter Staecker, to… Important Attribute: Continuity Continuity of purpose Continuity of execution 11/11/2018

12 1. New Technical Areas Ensure sustainable progress toward establishing IEEE’s leadership in important new technical areas (including the Smart Grid and selected areas within Life Sciences). Gordon Day (&PS) will continue

13 2. Digital Publishing (1EEE)
Develop and approve a plan to ensure that IEEE is at the forefront of digital publishing technology. Gordon Day (&PS) will continue

14 3. IEEE Conference Strategy
Develop and approve an IEEE Conference strategy – including protection of quality of IEEE publications. Gordon Day (&PS) will continue

15 4. Strategic Alliances Develop collaborative strategic alliances with other associations and publishers (including exploration of new joint membership agreements and incorporation of new publications in Xplore.

16 5. Member value: Ensure that all members are engaged and find a professional home in IEEE create a global strategic member development plan, particularly emphasizing practicing engineers/technologists and young professionals. - Gordon Day (&PS) will continue

17 A most important aspect of Presidential Priorities:
Continuity of vision, purpose, and execution. 11/11/2018

18 Topics for today IEEE: preliminaries
Priorities of the Board of Directors Strategy 11/11/2018

19 Some words about Strategy…
11/11/2018

20 Looking Forward: 2013…and beyond
Portfolio of technical, scientific interests Personal medicine, entertainment engineering, and… Significant membership, activities and leadership growth in Asia, Africa, Latin America New modes of information delivery, dissemination The disappearance of paper, the rise of mobile platforms, apps, avatars Much more ‘virtual’, globally-connected organization New organizational units, connecting members around the globe using new means of communication 21

21 Strategic Discussions
Old model: Develop a document Put it on the shelf Repeat New model: Scenarios Set Strategic Direction Opportunistic Experiments 11/11/2018

22 Trends that change our strategy:
Open Access is changing from threat to reality... Education: the virtual classroom? Social media and dynamic social networks will disrupt membership model Impact of the Cloud (big data) on content distribution Companies like Factual and Northern Lights are redefining the business of data mining and knowledge Standards development migrating from politically-driven to global business/technology–driven. What’s next? What are the implications? 11/11/2018

23 the Cloud, content distribution, …and beyond
Infrastructure as a service (Dropbox) Platform as a service (Google Apps) Software as a service (Office 365) The Internet of Things uniquely identifiable objects (things) and their virtual representations in an Internet-like structure The Singularity: Humans in-the-loop changes to Humans out-of-the loop 11/11/2018

24 How should IEEE respond?
These trends… …can also change our approaches to our current businesses The knowledge business – with complementary & synergistic segments Standards Publications Conferences Education Membership & Public Imperatives How should IEEE respond? 11/11/2018

25 Scenarios, Boundary Conditions, & Choices
Scenarios (around transformation of content) Content will be interactive Content will be free Content availability: all appropriate user interfaces Distribution platforms will be owned by others Boundary conditions: all scenarios are moving targets Strategic Choices: Make/Buy Radical Partnerships What’s your vision? 11/11/2018

26 Next steps Define direction (goals) for future
Take actions that move towards goals Follow/encourage other activities within IEEE that have strategic purpose/value Develop and refine approach for subsequent years We need your help 11/11/2018

27 Is technology moving too fast?
11/11/2018

28 What are your priorities?
Do they align with Priorities of the BoD? How can you advance them in your local area? What are your good ideas? What support do you need? Do they support your strategy? 11/11/2018

29 Other thoughts (not part of the presentation)
We need to be comfortable with the growth of the organization More emphasis on the practitioner What is the highest hurdle for this effort? 11/11/2018
