John mowed the lawn and earned $20. This made him happy, so he offered to mow the lawn every week as long as he got paid. Conversely, Jacob mowed the lawn, but didn’t get paid. Strangely enough, Jacob also offered to mow the lawn every week just for the joy of it, no reward. What is the difference between John and Jacob? Both John and Jacob were motivated to mow the lawn but for different reasons. John was motivated extrinsically, meaning that he worked because of an external reward. The money drove him, so to speak. Jacob, on the other hand, worked because he was motivated intrinsically, meaning he did it for personal satisfaction; his motivation was internal or in his heart. The main point is that motivation is important in our lives whether it is extrinsic or intrinsic.

2. “He looked around suddenly, felt the hair on the back of his neck go up. Things might be looking at him right now, waiting for him—waiting for dark so they could move in and take him. He fingered the hatchet at his belt. It was the only weapon he had, but it was something” (p51). This was 13 year old Brian Robeson’s predicament in the novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. His plane had crash-landed in the Canadian wilderness, and his only option was to survive or die. As I read this compelling story of survival, I pictured myself in Brian’s shoes. Although I have never had to survive out in the wilderness alone, without a doubt, I can relate to Brian in many ways.
