2 Puppetry Questions What is Puppetry?
What are some examples of puppetry you have seen before? What can you make puppets out of? What similarities do you see between puppetry and reader’s theatre?

3 What is Puppetry? Puppetry is the animation of an inanimate object.
What does that mean? Animation is giving something lifelike characteristic like movement and speech. Inanimate objects are things that are not alive.

4 Puppetry examples What was your favorite childhood toy? Why was it your favorite & how did it make you feel? What TV shows did you watch as a child? What were your favorites and why? Did any of those shows have puppets or animated characters? Which one was you favorite? What made those characters appealing?

6 We will watch the following on puppetry:

7 Reflection: What kinds of puppets did you see?
What materials can puppets be made of? How can we move puppets and animate them? How can we make puppets look like they’re alive?

8 Tomorrow’s class Tomorrow we will create “found object” puppets.
Go home tonight and find anything you think can be used to make a puppet and bring it to next class. DO NOT MAKE IT AT HOME. Do not go out and purchase any new materials for your puppet. It can only be made form objects found at home Next class we will make these puppets and introduce them to each other.

Answer the following questions in your drama duo tang as we watch Being Elmo: What types of puppets did Kevin make as a child? What materials did he use? How did the puppeteer make Elmo come to life? How did Elmo’s character change over time? Why were people struggling to find Elmo’s character? How do the puppeteers bring life into their puppets? Do you think puppetry has value in it? Is it an important art to perform? Why or why not?

18 Puppetry Assignment In groups of 4-5 you will create a puppet performance of a beloved children's story This will require you to combine the skills your learned from our radio plays (vocal control and sound effects) with the technical theatre part of puppetry – as you will be making your own puppets for your story You will choose one type of puppet for your play (aka all sock, or stick, or paper, etc) You will also create any “setting puppets” for your performance if so desired Your group will be responsible for getting all necessary materials for your puppets – I will provide the “stage” and glue.

19 Puppetry Assignment You will all work to create our puppets before moving onto creating your performances After we have completed our puppets and mastered your performances you will perform your puppet plays for Division 1 students! (K-3) So, make sure you to follow our timeline and use your time wisely and effectively.
