Space plays an important role in determining the overall composition of your artwork.

Positive Space is the areas in a work of art that are the subjects, or areas of interest. Negative Space is the area around the subjects, or areas of interest.

A good artist realizes that the space surrounding an object is just as important as the object itself. Negative space helps define a subject, and brings balance to a composition.

If you see the black hand, then the black shaded area is the positive space. The white areas become the negative space.

If you see the white hand, then the white area is the positive space. The black area becomes the negative space.

Therefore, Negative Space is the space around the object. In the left image, the negative space is the white area around the bottles. In the right image, the positive space is shown as the black objects.

So, Positive Space is the space that an object occupies. In the left image, the positive space is the area that the bottles take up. In the right image, the negative space is shown as the black area around the objects.
