4 What does reading look like in Kindergarten?
Children should have 1500 hours of reading on someone’s lap by the time a child enters kindergarten. Will my child learn to read? Children read books in the following ways: Reading the pictures Reading the words Retelling the story Teachers will provide children with “Just Right” books for your child to read at school and at home. Remember-all children are different! They learn to read at different rates and times. However, teachers will work with your child to achieve goals in reading.

5 What does math look like in Kindergarten?
Hands-on exploration of a variety of mathematical concepts Emphasis on conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills Large and small group experiences Content strands focused on: geometry, measurement, number sense, operations and computation, patterns

6 What does writing look like in Kindergarten?
Kindergarten students are encouraged to write about a topic of their choice… Kindergarten students are encouraged to use conventional spelling for common or familiar words and developmental spelling for less common words Developmental Spelling refers to a children’s attempt to use what they already know about letters and sounds to attempt to write words. Research indicated that encouraging developmental spelling promotes children’s understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds (Templeton & Bear, 1992) Teacher modeling their own writing Student sharing opportunities

10 CANVAS LMS What does Canvas offer for Parents? Canvas allows parents to set up notifications and offers a way to check your student’s learning on a mobile platform. Canvas makes it easier for students and parents to communicate with teachers.   *PLEASE NOTE:  You must have your student's Canvas username and password to link your Canvas parent account to your child's Canvas account.  Please contact your child's site/teacher if you do not have this information. What is Canvas?   Canvas is a learning management system (LMS) that allows teachers to provide instructional support, class calendars, assignments and resources for students in a safe online environment. Canvas is an integral part of blended classroom instruction.

“PTAG” is a volunteer organization of parents, teachers, and administrators who work together to promote quality education for our children. Our fundraisers include Jog-A-Thon, Box Tops for Education, Scholastic Book Fairs, Square 1 Art, Dining Out “Spirit” Nights, BINGO, and Summerfest!!

Supplies PTAG sells EPI School Supply Packets for $46 as a service to our JWE families ONLINE ORDERING ONLY!  Deadline is June 15th There will be a LIMITED number of packets available at Meet the Teacher in August.  These will be on a first come, first serve basis and there is a price increase! NO guarantees and NO additional orders will be made The supplies are collected by your child’s teacher and used in the classroom as community property Teachers LOVE the school supply packs! You can order between May 1 – June 15 Go to Enter school ID JEN007. Follow the directions to complete your order.   KEEP your online confirmation as your receipt to bring to Meet the Teacher in August to collect your student’s supplies.  Please note there are no refunds.
