2 What the research tells us
If you are anything like me you will be asking why do we need to do this Scaffolding allows you to: Customise to specific learning needs Effective Teaching It allows the teacher to incorporate a range of cognitive demands. It allows pupils to select the level of challenge. It encourages Literacy and numeracy to be infused effectively across the curriculum. Addressing the needs of our more challenging students in the classroom Scaffolding increases emphasis on oracy and group work, allowing for all abilities to participate in class. Teachers who scaffold highlighted how they did not “dumb down”, as one teacher put it, to the low-attainers but rather enabled them to achieve better Scaffolding allows you to encouraging classroom participation It encourages verbal participation in their learning. •It Leaves time for pupils to think before giving answers; It allows students to build up answers step by step; Scaffolding learning allows students to develop independence Scaffolding maintains learner engagement, on-task behaviour and motivation . It can also be used as a repair function that focused on learning and fostered independence when children were in difficulty. Finally it develops a heuristic role that encouraged students to use their own learning strategies. Heuristic is defined as “using a method of teaching that encourages learners to discover solutions for themselves J. Radford et al. / Learning and Instruction 36 (2015) 1e10
