2 The Witches mislead Macbeth by saying “none of women born/Shall harm Macbeth”
The ‘Thunder and lightning’ in the opening of the play creates a dark and violent atmosphere, setting the mood for the play. The Witches words “Fair is foul and foul is fair” suggest deception which is another key theme seen throughout the play e.g. “False face must hide what the false heart doth know” The Witches

3 Macbeth is given a set of prophecies by the Witches which feed his underlying ambition to be King.
When he finally persuaded to kill Duncan we see him become linked to the Witches and the supernatural through the use of rhyming couplets, “Hear it not, Duncan; for it is a knell/That summons thee to heaven or to hell” A second set of prophecies leads him to commit further evil acts and eventually leads to his demise at the end of the play. 4 Hallucinations and the natural order
Macbeth hallucinates in his soliloquy beginning “Is this a dagger I see before me”, perhaps brought by the witches Banquo Ghost appears to Macbeth, causing him to feel “blanched with fear” Lady Macbeths guilty conscience is revealed through her sleepwalking visions in which she laments “will these hand ne’er be clean?” Macbeths murderous rule upset the natural order causing strange events such as causing horses to “ eat each other” Hallucinations and the natural order
