“Corinthianize” meant “to live an immoral life. Its many taverns and easy access to prostitutes gave rise to a seafaring proverb: “Not for every man is the voyage to Corinth.”

1 Cor 1, 1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, 2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ--their Lord and ours: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way--in all your speaking and in all your knowledge—6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8 He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

Destroying the Temple (tearing down the Church)
3: Don't you know that you (plural—indicates speaking to the church) yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?17 If anyone destroys God's temple (the church), God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple. One of severist statements Paul ever made.
25
Destroying the Temple (tearing down the Church)
1:10-17, by following leaders rather than Christ. 1:18-2:16, by following worldly wisdom rather than the wisdom of God. 3:1-23, by not growing up!
26
Divisions in the Church
10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.
27
Divisions in the Church
11 My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. Paul identifies his source of information. Probably to help control gossip and further division.
28
1 Cor 1:10-f Divisions in the Church
V12, “What I mean is this: one of you says, I follow Paul I follow Apollos I follow Cephas I follow Christ The lines of division were drawn clearly.
29
1 Cor 1:10-f Divisions in the Church
Greek culture emphasized following particular teacher’s message and authority. Plato & Aristotle Paul wanted to stop the practice of following individual teachers.
30
1 Cor 1:10-f Divisions in the Church 3 Rhetorical Questions
NO Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?
31
1 Corinthians 1:18-f Wisdom of the World Wisdom of God The Cross
Foolishness (18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, Philosophy (1:20) Jews—signs Greeks—wisdom Eloquence (2:1) Superior wisdom (2:1) Jesus Christ
32
How did Paul reach out to a cosmopolitan, sex saturated, immoral, materially rich, educated society?
33
skandalon V18, For the message of the cross is foolishness
V23, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles…
34
skandalon Deut 21: 22 If a man guilty of a capital offense is put to death and his body is hung on a tree, 23 you must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God's curse.
35
skandalon 1:25, For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.
36
WHY? 1:28-30, He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.
37
The Gospel is not just for the:
Wiseman (20) Scholar (20 Philosopher (20) Influential (26) Noble birth (26) God made His message accessible for all people!
38
Boasting? 1:30-31, It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
39
Jesus Christ and Him crucified
2:1 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.

1 Cor 2:6-9 God’s Secret Wisdom
7 No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"--
45
V10, But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
Revelation
46
Spiritual Man 2:10-16 10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: 16 "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
47
Three Types of People 1 Cor 2:10-16 thru 3:1-4
Carnal Believer 3:1-4 Spiritual Man 2:10-16 Natural Man 2:14
48
The Spiritual man is controlled by the Spirit
Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

50% knew who preached the “sermon on the mount”
Gallop Poll 80% of Americans consider themselves Christians 50% knew who preached the “sermon on the mount” Less than 50% could recall five of the 10 commandments 20% said they would be willing to suffer for their faith
50
Natural Man 2:14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
51
Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly--mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? 4 For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men? Carnal Believer 3:1-4
52
? Which are you? The Natural Man The Spiritual Man The Carnal Believer
53
Whose Church Is It? 3:5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.
54
Rewarded? 3:7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.
55
Foundation 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ
56
3:12, If any man builds on this foundation using…
Wood Hay Straw Gold Silver Costly stones
57
13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
58
Must I go and empty handed Thus my dear Redeemer meet?
Not one day of service give him, Lay no trophies at his feet?

Destroying the Temple (tearing down the Church)
3: Don't you know that you (plural—indicates speaking to the church) yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?17 If anyone destroys God's temple (the church), God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple. One of severist statements Paul ever made.
60
1 Cor 3:21-23 So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God. Unfortunately, they did not stop their boasting. Writing in 95 A.D. Clement of Rome identifies the same divisions in Corinth.

V3, judgment of others on us V4, judgment of one’s own conscience.
1 Cor 4:3-5 Three Judgments V3, judgment of others on us V4, judgment of one’s own conscience. V4-5, the Lord’s judgment
68
1 Corinthians 4 Greek & Roman Philosophers (Plato & Seneca)
regarded conscience as passing final judgment on a man. Paul disagreed: Only God can pass final judgment on man.
69
1. Conscience: Written on our hearts.
Romans 2:14 Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)
70
2. A Clear Conscience Acts 24: 16 So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man. Romans 9:1, I speak the truth in Christ--I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit--
71
3. A Weak Conscience 1 Cor 8:7 But not everyone knows this. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat such food they think of it as having been sacrificed to an idol, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.
72
4. Wounding another’s Conscience
1 Cor 8:12 When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.
73
5. A Seared Conscience 1 Timothy 4:2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
74
6. A Corrupted Conscience
Titus 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.
75
7a. A Cleansed Conscience
Hebrews 9:14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
76
7b. A Cleansed Conscience
Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
77
8. The Lord is the Only Accurate Judge
4b, “It is the Lord who judges me. Paul doesn’t care how others judge him; he is moderately concerned about his own judgment of himself. But he knows the Lord is the only accurate judge.
78
God’s Accurate Judgment
V5, Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts.
79
God’s Accurate Judgment
5c, “At that time each will receive his praise from God.” “Well done, good, and faithful servant.”

The haunting story of fourteen-year-old Rod Matthews serves as a warning to a culture gone adrift. Rod was not interested in the things that normally interest teenagers. Neither sports nor books were enough to quench his insatiable boredom. Only one thing excited him: death. He spent hours watching the video Faces of Death, a collection of film clips of people dying violently. Rod’s curiosity about death led him to want to see death personally, not just on the television or movie screen. Eventually, he found a way to satisfy his curiosity. One winter afternoon he lured a friend out into the woods and proceeded to beat him to death with a baseball bat. During his trial for murder, the most telling remark was made by a child psychiatrist who was asked to give a clinical evaluation of Rod’s condition. The doctor’s assessment was that Rod was not insane in the conventional sense but that he simply didn’t “know right from wrong. … He [was] morally handicapped” (emphasis mine)” Mark DeVries, Family-Based Youth Ministry, (Downers Grove, IL, InterVarsity Press, 1994, p. 53

One of the first cases that came to the public’s attention was that of 14-year-old Rod Matthews of Canton, Massachusetts, a high school freshman. Matthews lured classmate Shaun Ouillette, also 14, into the woods on a November afternoon in 1986 on the pretext of building a fort. Matthews carried a baseball bat, which he said he needed to return to someone. Encouraging the larger boy to walk in front of him down the wooded path, Matthews waited for his opportunity and then smashed Ouillette on the head with the bat. He continued to strike his soon helpless victim, bludgeoning him to death. While Matthews informed police and his parents that he thought Ouillette had run away from home, he brought two friends, Robbie Peterson and Jonathan Cash, on separate occasions to view the body of the boy the police were searching for in vain. Cash eventually reported the murder to police by means of an unsigned letter. The next morning, three weeks after the murder, police found Ouillette’s body and arrested Matthews. Matthews, a bright youth with an IQ of 132,

General George McClellan “Young Napoleon”
Abraham Lincoln "This is not the time to be making points of etiquette and personal dignity, I would hold McClellan's horse if he will only bring us success."
88
Civil War General George McClellan was put in charge of the great Army of the Potomac, primarily because public opinion was on his side. He enjoyed being told he was a "Young Napoleon." However, history records that his efforts were less than sensational and he was not a great military leader. One evening President Abraham Lincoln and two of his staff members went to visit McClellan at his home. McClellan was at a wedding. One hour later McClellan appeared and did not even pay attention to the three men awaiting his return. Later, a servant reported back to the waiting party that McClellan had gone to bed! The President's associates were enraged, but Lincoln merely got up and led the way home. "This is not the time to be making points of etiquette and personal dignity," the President explained. "I would hold McClellan's horse if he will only bring us success."

Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. One evening, while waiting for a bus, he was standing with a crowd of people looking in the window of a taxidermist shop. In the center of the window was a large owl that attracted the attention of all who passed by. The self-appointed expert began to criticize the job done on it. "If I couldn't do better than that," he said pompously, "I'd find another business. Just look at it. The head is out of proportion, the pose of the body is unnatural, and the feet are pointed in the wrong direction." Just then the owl turned his head and gave the fellow a broad wink. The crowd laughed as the critic slicked away.

Ecstatic Utterance? 12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
174
Ecstatic Utterance? Context of Paul’s words
Mystery cults Commonly experienced ecstatic outbursts where the initiate or devotee appeared to be possessed by a supernatural power. Might cry out, “Serapis is Lord.”
175
Ecstatic Utterance? Context of Paul’s words
Thus ecstatic utterance is not the most reliable criterion of what it meant to be filled with or possessed by the Spirit. Paul suggests that a more accurate proof would be the simple statement: Jesus is Lord!

Tongues—1 Cor 14 2. Are not understood by the speaker.
13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.

Tongues—1 Cor 14 3. The speaker’s mind and utterance are not coordinated as in ordinary speech. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

Tongues—1 Cor 14 4. Expresses praise or thanks- giving to God.
16 If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.
187
Tongues—1 Cor 14 4. The speaker is able to control the exercise of his gift. 28, If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

Baptism for the Dead Vicarious Baptism
New converts were being baptized to fill the ranks of Christians who had died. Bereaved persons were turning to Christ in hope of reunion with their Christian loved ones. Christians were being baptized in anticipation of the resurrection of the dead.
195
Baptism for the Dead Paul was not necessarily affirming the practice, he simply used their practice to substantiate his belief in the resurrection of the dead. The teaching of this passage is obscure. The teaching on salvation throughout the Scripture is clear.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS Chuck Swindoll in Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life shares a parable entitled “A Rabbit on the Swim Team.” Once upon a time, the animals decided they should do something meaningful to meet the problems of the new world. So they organized a school. They adopted a curriculum of running, climbing, swimming, and flying. To make it easier to administer the curriculum, all the animals took all the subjects. The duck was excellent in swimming; in fact, better than than his instructor. He made only passing grades in flying, however, and was very poor in running. Since he was slow in running, he had to drop swimming and stay after school to practice running. This caused his web feet to be badly worn, so that he was only average in swimming. But average was quite acceptable, so nobody worried about that—except the duck. The rabbit started at the top of his class in running, but developed a nervous twitch in his leg muscles because of so much make-up work in swimming. The squirrel was excellent in climbing, but he encountered constant frustration in flying class because his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the treetop down. He developed “Charlie horses” from overexertion and only got a C in climbing and a D in running.
