2 About me I wasn’t keen on reading when I was young.
My mum was worried about me because I didn’t do very well at school. She encouraged me to read about football in newspapers, magazines and books. Gradually I came to love books.

3 Facts about me and my favourite things

4 About my books I have written 37 books for children
My books have been translated into 8 languages I have sold over 300,000 books I am not a millionaire! I live in a terraced house and drive a car with 190,000 miles on the clock.

5 How long does it take to write a book?
Shorter books like Football Academy take about a month. The Foul Play ones are more complicated and three times as long: they take four or five months.

6 Football Academy series
My Football Academy books are about a Premier League under-twelve side – about what it’s like to play the game at the top. Ryan is the team captain – so why does he bully his team mates? Yunis is the star player – so why does his dad want him to give up football? James is the son of an England international – so why does he start making terrible mistakes?

7 Where do you get your ideas from?
Newspapers. Football is full of crime. I read about it the newspapers. When a story grips me I know it’s one I can use in a book.

8 Foul Play series Fourteen-year-old boy called Danny Harte who wants to solve football crimes.    Danny … takes on a dodgy football chairman in Foul Play faces a Russian billionaire in Dead Ball defeats a corrupt footballer trafficking agent in Off Side tackles a burglar of footballer’s houses in Killer Pass uncovers a worldwide football scam in Italy in Own Goal

9 Are all your books about football?
No, I have written about racism, fair trade, rugby, Italy, flying, having a parent with a disability, First World War, soldiers, having a parent in prison, dyslexia

10 Rugby Academy series Rugby Academy was inspired by children of serving RAF personnel, and I used their input to get life in a forces family right.  In Combat Zone football-mad Woody finds himself stuck in a rugby-obsessed British boarding school, as his dad is being deployed overseas. Books come with Top Trumps playing cards

11 Does anyone help you write your books?
My family help me develop stories, my editor checks the story and our cats help in lots of ways…

12 Wings Four girls and boys at a football summer camp near an old airfield, who find themselves propelled back in time.   If they can learn how to fly the great RAF planes – the Sopwith Camel, Spitfire and Typhoon, history will lead them on a flightpath home to the present. Books come with a plane you can make at home.

13 Have you any tips on writing?
Write about something you enjoy and are interested in Read lots of other books to help improve your writing Share your writing with others and ask them what bits they did and didn’t like Talk to people about their lives Try interesting new things Don’t give up!
