Women in the UK aged between 50 and 70 are invited to have a routine mammography every three years.
This is gradually being extended to women aged

At your appointment, you will have a test called a mammogram (a breast x-ray) to look for cancer that may be too small to see or feel.
The sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the more effective treatment is likely to be.

Having screening mammograms cannot prevent a breast cancer. It is also possible for a breast cancer to develop in between each three yearly mammogram.

That’s why it’s important to continue to be breast aware and report any changes to your GP even if you’ve had a mammogram recently.

39. CERVICAL CANCER 14TH commonest cancer – falling year on year
Most cases develop in women aged between 25 and 45. Some cases develop in older and younger women.
It is rare in women aged under 25 years.

This is because cervical cancer can be prevented by regular cervical screening tests.
In less developed parts of the world, cervical cancer is the second or third most common type of cancer in women.

42. CERVICAL CANCER -Symptoms?
Bleeding between normal periods (intermenstrual bleeding).
Bleeding after having sex (postcoital bleeding).

43. CERVICAL CANCER -Symptoms?
Any vaginal bleeding in women past the menopause.
A vaginal discharge that smells unpleasant.
Discomfort or pain during sex

44. CERVICAL CANCER HPV and cervical cancer
Two types, HPV 16 and 18, are involved in the development of most cases of cervical cancer (70%).
(Note: some other strains of HPV cause common warts and verrucas. These strains of HPV are not associated with cervical cancer.)

The HPV vaccine has been introduced for girls from the age of 12 years in the UK.
It is very effective at stopping cancer of the cervix from developing – 70% reduction

46. CERVICAL CANCER HPV and cervical cancer
However, even if you have had the HPV vaccine, you must attend for cervical screening. This is because the vaccine does not guarantee complete protection against cervical cancer.
