State of the Institute Annual Report 2018
This report will explore how IISE is progressing on various key initiatives and activities. There are a lot of new things going on at IISE.
2
State of the Profession
ISE is Thriving with a Bright Future Productivity in the Competitive Marketplace Economic Turnaround Globalization Social Responsibility Leadership The profession of industrial and systems engineering is in high demand around the globe. Job market is strong. Today, more than ever, there is a strong need for ISE principles in the competitive market. As the U.S. and world economies have grown stronger, no profession is better qualified to lead the economic turnaround than industrial and systems engineering. Data analytics, information systems, lean, quality, effectiveness are specialties of ISEs and they matter more than ever. ISE is booming around the world. Many global economies have seen a real growth in manufacturing. Global communication skills and cultural knowledge are critical to the success of ISEs today. Companies also recognize that social responsibility isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s also good for business. Walmart, UPS, Deere, Disney, Boeing, and many more are leading the way with sustainability initiatives and ISEs are playing key roles. Design and distribution are critical elements in “sustainability” plans; ISEs are trained to deliver in these key areas. ISEs are uniquely trained to lead. Many current and former CEO and COO positions in companies like Apple, Walmart, Delta, Northwest, DuPont, Raytheon, GM, Disney, UPS, Burger King, Yum Foods, the Southern Company, Accenture and many others have been filled by ISEs. And IISE helps prepare its members to achieve success.
3

Membership IISE Connect Leadership, Publishing, Speaking Opportunities
Societies & Divisions Members-Only Webinars Career Center Chapter Membership ISE Magazine & Other Publications Advocacy for the Profession Discounted Conferences and Training There are certain basic elements of membership. There is a new way to network: IISE Connect (connect.iise.org). It’s a great way to build a virtual community. Members can also choose to belong to any or all of the 16 technical groups, focusing on everything from logistics and supply chain to healthcare or engineering management. Everyone receives an award-winning ISE monthly magazine. All members receive significant discounts on conferences and training courses. IISE offers opportunities to engage in the profession in many ways, such as volunteering, publishing in the journals or magazines, and speaking at any of the conferences. More than 75 members-only webinars are held each year to bring continuous learning to the membership. At the heart of IISE membership for many people is membership in a professional or student chapter. The society advocates for and represents industrial and systems engineers everywhere.

Member Value Portfolio
Professional Networking Mentoring Leadership Development Opportunities Job Search Assistance Skills Certification Knowledge Transfer, Education, Training Publishing and Speaking Opportunities There are certain elements that define the value for members. Invariably, IISE members rank networking as the benefit they seek. Networking is provided in many different ways. IISE has enhanced its Career Center, providing resources to help members find employment opportunities and to help companies find the engineers they need. IISE connects young professionals with more experienced members for career mentoring. IISE is a great way to develop leadership skills. Safe and low-risk opportunities to be visible in the profession are prevalent. When members need to develop new skills and want to make themselves more marketable, IISE is there to help.

New Membership Initiatives
Corporate Partnerships Graduating Students Transition Time to Professional Membership Extended Automated Renewal Dues Indexed to World Bank Applied Ergonomics Society IISE is working with its corporate partners to better define desirable member benefits, focusing on hiring and training. IISE is revising its pricing models for corporate members. IISE is doubling the time ISE graduates have to transition from student to full professional membership. In the past, discounted dues were offered for one year following graduation. This time period is being extended to two years. IISE has created the opportunity for members to renew automatically, thereby eliminating the need to make this decision on an annual basis. IISE is working to make membership more affordable globally by indexing dues according to World Bank classifications of economies. There will be 4 stratified dues levels, with graduated discounts. This is being tested in the current year. If successful, IISE will roll it out soon afterward. IISE has created a new society for the first time in 30 years. The Applied Ergonomics Society made its debut at the 2018 Applied Ergonomics Conference. The new society will provide year-round networking and educational service to this important community.

Student to Professional Conversion
Value Proposition Support & Assistance for Students Transitioning to Professionals Active Young Professionals Group Leadership Development Virtual Career Fair Extended Transition IISE has strong reach in the student market, particularly undergrads. The Institute is working to improve the conversion rate from student to professional member. IISE is developing services targeted specifically to new graduates who are moving into the first stages of their professional careers. The association is supporting graduates with tools and knowledge they need to succeed, as well as helping them create that network that is essential to their career growth. IISE has created a new graduation packet congratulating them on this achievement and providing information about transitioning to a professional, including the benefits of membership. IISE connects grads with the Young Professionals, a group within IISE. They are very active in helping students transition after graduation. In 2017, IISE offered two virtual career fairs. There was good participation among students as well as companies. It helped students find jobs. This offering will be repeated. IISE is changing its dues rates, offering graduating students a longer time period before they have to pay full professional dues. The “step-up” will now extend from one year to two years.

New Online Training Partnership with UL – PureSafety
Wide Course Selection Modular Cost-Effective and Convenient It is critical that ISEs maintain current technical and managerial knowledge. IISE offers a wide range of training options. One of the most cost-effective and convenient methods is the online training that the Institute offers. The courses are available in a wide range of industrial and systems engineering topics, as well as management-related areas. IISE has also recently signed a contract with UL-PureSafety to make its extremely broad and deep array of short, modular courses available to IISE members. As this rolls out, it will further expand the cost-effective training that is available on flexible schedules and that helps members stay informed in the profession and their industry.

Job Search Assistance Formal Support Informal Support Career Center
Networking Connections Internships Conference Participation Mentoring Social Media Leadership Roles An important area that many members benefit from is in the area of Job Search. Whether a member is graduating from college, has been out-placed by an employer, or is just looking for a new opportunity, many members seek a job at some point in their career. IISE offers a career center, providing resources to help members find employment opportunities and help companies find the engineers they need. IISE has a program that connects young professionals with more experienced members for career mentoring. Perhaps of even greater value is the informal support that comes from being a member of IISE. People have always said that finding a job is all about “who you know.” At IISE, the connections provide that ready-made network when it is needed.
