Disease: any condition that is harmful to or interferes with the well-being of an organism.

Invaders cause harm by either taking nutrients away from cells or producing waste products that poison cells and kill them

Bacteria
Some are harmful to the body and cause various diseases
Example. Pneumonia, tetanus, strep throat
Some contaminate water and spoil food
Example. E. Coli, Salmonella

Fungal infections can cause problems such as athlete’s foot

Protists
Protists usually live in animal hosts and when transmitted to humans cause infection and illness like malaria and beaver fever

Viruses
Viruses are non living structures that have no nucleus, cytoplasm, organelles, or cell membrane
Are small strands of genetic information covered in a protein coat
Are not living things because they are not true cells
Invade living cells and cause them to make more viruses
Cause colds, cold sores, flu, HIV/AIDS etc.

8. THE DEFENDERS (IMMUNE SYSTEM)
White blood cells
Engulf the invader (like an amoebae), then their lysosomes release chemicals that destroy both the invader and the white blood cells
Also kill body cells that have been damaged by bacteria, viruses, or chemicals
Pus
strands of protein and cell fragments that remain after the attack

9. THE DEFENDERS (IMMUNE SYSTEM)
Antibodies are made by special type of white blood cells
They lock onto the invader, preventing it from damaging/killing cells
There is only one type of antibody per type of invader
each type of antibody is designed to fit the shape of the markers on the invader
