1 Earth’s Energy Budget and The Greenhouse Effect
This template can be used as a starter file for presenting training materials in a group setting. Sections Right-click on a slide to add sections. Sections can help to organize your slides or facilitate collaboration between multiple authors. Notes Use the Notes section for delivery notes or to provide additional details for the audience. View these notes in Presentation View during your presentation. Keep in mind the font size (important for accessibility, visibility, videotaping, and online production) Coordinated colors Pay particular attention to the graphs, charts, and text boxes. Consider that attendees will print in black and white or grayscale. Run a test print to make sure your colors work when printed in pure black and white and grayscale. Graphics, tables, and graphs Keep it simple: If possible, use consistent, non-distracting styles and colors. Label all graphs and tables.

3 Use a section header for each of the topics, so there is a clear transition to the audience.

4 What is the Sun’s light? “Sunlight” is electromagnetic radiation that travels in wave-like motion from the Sun outwards. This radiation includes ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), and visible light (VL). Radiation from the Sun travels through a vacuum in space before it reaches Earth. It takes about 8 minutes for the light leaving the Sun to reach Earth. Use a section header for each of the topics, so there is a clear transition to the audience.

6 What does Ultraviolet Light Do?
Ultraviolet light is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer. What ultraviolet light that does make it to Earth’s surface is has beneficial and harmful effects: Damages skin Damages eyes Slows plant growth Breaks down paints and dyes and plastics

7 What does Infrared Light Do?
Infrared light has a warming effect on objects on Earth and Earth’s surface. Infrared radiation changes the movement of particles causing them to vibrate more quickly.

8 What does Visible Light Do?
Visible light is the part of the spectrum that can be seen with the eye. The gases and particles in the atmosphere scatter the colors in the visible light range which cause the skies to appear in different colors. Clean air scatters the most blue and that is why the sky appears blue mostly during the middle of the day.

9 What Happens to the Sun’s light when it Enters Earth’s Atmosphere?
Reflected Particles floating in the air as well as clouds can “bounce” the sun’s energy back out into space. Think “mirror”

10 What Happens to the Sun’s light when it Enters Earth’s Atmosphere?
Absorbed Heat can be “soaked” up by clouds and Earth’s crust making our atmosphere warmer. Think “sponge”

11 What Happens to the Sun’s light when it Enters Earth’s Atmosphere?
Emitted Heat can be “given up” up by clouds and Earth’s crust warming us from below Think “heater”

12 What Happens to the Sun’s light when it Enters Earth’s Atmosphere?
Passed Through A lot of Earth’s energy can pass right through our atmosphere and keep going without affecting us Think “window”
