FRBR/FRAD RDA structure Core elements RDA Toolkit Q&A

8 Introducing RDA : A Guide to the Basics Oliver, Chris ISBN-13: ISBN-10: X Publisher: American Library Association Date: July 2010 Page Count: 117 How many have you read this book? How many have you heard of this book? It’s very helpful to understand why we move forward from AACR2 to RDA, worth reading, and after reading, you know at least one reason why Chris Oliver is chosen for RDA editor to working on RDA rewording. And some contents of slides in this section are coming out of her book.

9 FRBR/FRAD and RDA RDA training starts with FRBR/FRAD
RDA is an application of the FRBR and FRAD conceptual models RDA support FRBR/FRAD user tasks RDA vocabulary, concepts, and categories come from FRBR and FRAD RDA structure is organized based on FRBR and FRAD entities, attributes, and relationships If you have noticed or heard that a lot feedbacks on RDA trainings by RDA testers were recommending to start with FRBR and FRAD, why? … RDA is an application of the FRBR and FRAD conceptual models, a set of practical instructions based on the FRBR and FRAD models. RDA explicitly focus and support the FRBR/FRAD user tasks. You will see them throughout RDA instructions …. So some background knowledge of these models helps to explain the nature of RDA and how it differs from AACR2.

10 FRBR/FRAD User tasks Entity-Relationship models
FRBR: Find, Identify, Select, Obtain FRAD: Find, Identify, Contextualize, Justify Entity-Relationship models FRBR Entities: Group 1: Work, Expression, Manifestation, Item Group 2: Persons, Families, Corporate bodies Group 3: Concepts, Objects, Events, Places FRAD Entities: FRBR entities, Name, Identifier, Controlled access point, Rules, Agency Entities, Attributes, Relationships What is FRBR and what is FRAD? We hope by now that you have heard about them too often. So in today’s overview, we won’t get into details of FRBR and FRAD, but a quick refreshment. We do list references for you to take home, so if you need, you can learn more about them. FRBR and FRAD are conceptual models. Users and their needs are the starting point for both models. They are defined as user tasks. … In next two slides you will see how they are being defined in FRBR and FRAD. And you will see them again and often throughout RDA instructions FRBR and FRAD are entity relationship models. Please see the sheet: For FRBR entity-relationship. Work is realized through Expression is embodied in Manifestation is exemplified by item FRAD model extends the FRBR model by adding family to Group 2 entities and introducing more granularity: Bibliographic entities are known by names and/or identifiers which are the basis for controlled access points. The formulation of controlled access points is governed by rules that are applied by agencies. Both FRBR and FRAD offer us a structure to meet these user tasks. The data elements describing a resource that are covered in RDA generally reflect the attributes and relationships associated with the entities work, expression, manifestation, and item, that are defined in FRBR.

13 RDA Structure (1) 1) RDA is divided into 10 sections
Elements corresponding to the entity attributes Browsing through the table of contents of RDA, it is immediately apparent that the structure and language of RDA are different from AACR2. And you all know that they are from FRBR/FRAD conceptual models. RDA is divided into 10 sections. Sections 1–4 cover elements corresponding to the entity attributes defined in FRBR and FRAD; sections 5–10 cover elements corresponding to the relationships defined in FRBR and FRAD Elements corresponding to the relationships

14 RDA Structure (2) 2) In each section: The initial chapter
sets out the functional objectives and principles underlying the guidelines and instructions in that section, and specifies core elements to support those functional objectives. Subsequent chapters within each section cover attributes or relationships that support a specific user task

15 RDA Structure (2) Example of section 1, first chapter and remaining chapters, functional objectives and principles that support specific user tasks Then chapter 2 FRBR user task: Identify; chapter 3: select; chapter 4: obtain.

16 RDA Structure (3) 3) Supplementary guidelines and instructions are provided in appendices

17 RDA Core Elements Element: A word, character, or group of words and/or characters representing a distinct unit of bibliographic information Core elements are identified and selected to support FRBR/FRAD user tasks RDA set of core elements defines a base level, a level below which would jeopardize the user’s ability to fulfill any tasks As a minimum, a resource description for a work, expression, manifestation, or item should include all the core elements that are applicable and readily ascertainable. So it’s floor. The description should also include any additional elements that are required in a particular case to differentiate the resource from one or more other resources bearing similar identifying information.

18 RDA Core Elements RDA Core Elements are identified and selected based on those attributes and relationships designed in FRBR/FRAD as supporting the following user tasks: identify and select a manifestation identify works and expressions embodied in a manifestation identify the creator or creators of a work. find a person, family, or corporate body associated with a resource identify a person, family, or corporate body

19 RDA Toolkit http://www.rdatoolkit.org/
An integrated browser-based online product that allows users to interact with a collection of cataloging related documents and resources including RDA. All documents in RDA Toolkit are searchable and browseable Three sections: RDA, Tools, Resources Two views of RDA content—table of contents and RDA element set User-created workflows, maps, and other tools Full text of AACR2 with links to RDA Library of Congress Policy Statements Today we will cover only briefly on What is RDA Toolkit and what is included in RDA Toolkit. We won’t get into any details on how to use some features/functions of RDA Toolkit or demo on how to navigate RDA Toolkit. We will refer you to RDA Toolkit Webinars for additional trainings. It provides …. Here we will see some snapshots When there is a new release for RDA Toolkit, it is made on the second Tuesday of the month. Releases typically contain updates to content and metadata, enhancements to RDA Toolkit functionality, and fixes to existing bugs. You can subscribe to its RSS news feed to get notification of releases. The January release was to improve speed. There is no release for March and the next release is April 10.

20 Quick and Advanced Search

21 Browseable RDA Table of contents view with option to be filtered

22 RDA Element Set View Element set view is like a dictionary of RDA elements. Every RDA element is listed and includes the name of the element, its definition, the controlled vocabulary used in the element, etc.

23 RDA Mappings, User-created workflows, and other tools
RDA Toolkit provides mapping tables to MARC and to MODS. These is also entity relationship diagram that presents a visual mapping of RDA elements which based on FRBR/FRAD as you can see in your handout:

24 User-created workflows

25 Full-text AACR2 with link to RDA; LCPS, other resources

26 RDA Toolkit also includes other information, such as…
