1 01/16/13 All sorts of ……. WORMS Worms live on land, freshwater and in the sea. Sea worms can be found on mudflats, in tide pools, living in tubes at the bottom of the ocean, or even as parasites on other animals. Sea worms can be herbivores or carnivores or omnivores. 1

Flatworms are a group of non segmented worm. These animals lack a body cavity and have no specialized circulatory/respiratory organs, but pass oxygen and nutrients through their bodies by diffusion. Flatworms can be free living or parasitic. 2

01/16/13 Spoonworms live in burrows in the sand and mud. The worm has a round body with a projection at the end known as a proboscis. These worms feed from within their burrows by projecting their proboscis out of the mud and using it to catch edible particles in the water. Tiny hairs (cilia) then carry the food down the proboscis to the mouth. 3

4 Ribbon Worm http://www.flickr.com/photos/saspotato/5776035637/
01/16/13 Ribbon worms have smooth, unsegmented bodies. Most of these worms are carnivorous predators that catch prey with an organ in their mouth called a proboscis, that they shoot out and stick to their prey. Some worms have a sharp barb on their proboscis that stabs its prey and may even secrete venom to kill prey that can be many times larger than the ribbon worm. 4

5 Peanut Worms http://www.flickr.com/photos/7880841@N06/538157373/
01/16/13 There are about 300 species of peanut worm in the world- they are bilaterally symetrical, unsegmented worms. Most peanut worms live in burrows or discarded shells, and some even bore into solid rocks for shelter. 5

6 Acorn Worms http://www.cbu.edu/~aross/companat/acorn-worm-CBU-1.jpg
01/16/13 Acorn worms live in burrows in the mud, and are either suspension (suck up food above the mud) or deposit (eat the mud itself) feeders. 6

7 Annelids: The Segmented Worms
01/16/13 Annelids: The Segmented Worms Annelids are the segmented worms (Phylum Annelida). There are over 17,000 species of annelids today, that live in marine, fresh and terrestrial environments. The segments that make up an annelid’s body each contain the same sets of organs, and many have a pair of parapodia that are used for locomotion. 7

8 What are segments? 01/16/13 Segments- repeated part of an animal’s body 8

9 Lugworm http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristiand/3223893974/ 01/16/13
A lugworm buries itself in the mud, and uses its segmented body to dig a burrow. Its middle section has bristles and pairs of feathery gills, that may be colored red with an oxygen carrying pigment, hemoglobin. 9

11 Burrows 01/16/13 This is a lugworm, whose burrow can be identified by its fecal castings at the surface. 11

12 Nereid Worm http://www.flickr.com/photos/a_semenov/3099130614/
01/16/13 These worms are also known as pile worms. They are worms that burrow in mudflats. Their body is covered in parapodia, which it uses to move through burrows. These worms are omnivores and have strong jaws that they use to capture prey and chew on seaweed that drifts by. 12

13 Nereid Worm Jaws http://www.flickr.com/photos/a_semenov/3459795723/
01/16/13 This is a close up view of the jaws of a nereid worm… you can see how large they are, and how they might be useful for capturing prey. 13

14 01/16/13 Sand Worm This worm is found in sandy or muddy beaches. They live in the sediment, hunting for small crustaceans, mollusks and even other worms. The tiny legs along the sides of the worm allow it to move through mud and sand to hunt. 14

15 Spaghetti Worm http://www.flickr.com/photos/saspotato/4796060775/
01/16/13 Spaghetti Worm This worm is a segmented worm that lives in small mud tubes in the mudflats. It uses its tentacles to eat particles of food on the mud surface. 15

16 And an old friend: Earthworm
01/16/13 And an old friend: Earthworm Earth worms are segmented worms that live in soil on land. They have a distinct clitellum (round band near one end) which aids in depositing eggs. 16
