2 Goal: Promote officers getting awarded for impactful work while maintaining award quality

3 Commissioned Corps Activity (CCA) Awards Share Point
Your One Stop Shop for Everything Awards Forms Examples CC policy CDC Guidance Board Members CDC deadlines Bookmark it!!!

4 Important Principles (I)
Myth: Has to be a separate body of work from your regular job duties (false) Fact: Must show public health impact! Various ways: Health outcome – morbidity, mortality Policy change Cost savings Improved program efficiency Generation of new knowledge Secured new resources (financial, personnel) Information dissemination (extended reach)

5 Important Principles (II)
Can not be awarded twice for same activity Exceptions: Career wrap High level leadership of large responses Leadership of a number of activities: Some must be previously un-awarded

6 Enter the Award History
Ensures compliance with policy of not double awarding work Need full award history for all awards (no exceptions) If none, must indicate We are trying to make this easier through download from PIR

7 Level of Award Determined by 4 factors: Scope of impact
Magnitude of achievement Leadership Length of time No future impact! May also award with Valor * CCM

8 Group vs Individual Awards
For large responses, individual awards typically for the few in highest leadership positions Decided by response leadership (or the group leading an activity) Individual award for leadership- if significant contributions above and beyond group work Cannot opt out of the group award! An OUC is a high level award!

9 A Word about EIS EIS wrap allows for disparate activities to be bundled (in a way that might otherwise be difficult to tie together) No One Size Fits All– level based on impact; needn’t be 3 activities; can get > 1 award for EIS work Typically packaged as AM Need EIS Program concurrence ( OK)

10 Career Counseling Often better to have a higher level award than multiple lower level ones…. Example: OSM > CIT + CIT + CIT

11 Timeliness Due to Division Due to CIO Due to CDC
Don’t want to see > 2 cycles at CDC Board A lot of the hard work is done in the CIOs Listen to your Division and CIO award reps! Due to Division Due to CIO Due to CDC

12 Level of Approvals Agency: OSM and below for individual awards; UC
CCAB*: DSM; MSM; OUC; any award with Valor * Commissioned Corps Awards Board (HQ)

13 CDC Honor Awards Board Purview
Work done within scope of Officer’s CDC duties Those outside an Agency’s awards board process are reviewed by SG Awards Board Example: Deployment Category-specific work has interim step via CPO Awards Board If in doubt, consult CCA

14 A Word about Valor Act(ions) of bravery and courage, and/or heroism, in particular those resulting in the saving or preserving of life or health of others Determining factors which must be demonstrated: Degree of risk to personal safety, level of bravery, and the demonstration of courage Not to be used to recognize hazardous assignments or exposure to dangerous and life threatening environments (service awards)

15 A Few Nuts and Bolts (I) Nominator must sign within 13 months of the last accomplishment! Goes through chain of nominator Group where work was done must sign off If changed positions, current supervisor must concur to affirm officer in good standing

16 A Few Nuts and Bolts (II)
It is in your best interest to make it easy to read: Bullets!!! Limit acronyms Avoid flowery language Accomplishments are what you did– impacts are what resulted! (so impacts are generally not verbs….) Keep Conclusion short

17 A Few Ground Rules All awards must go through CIO Board or rep
Can’t accept late submissions (effort to be fair) All comments from CDC Board must at least be considered (and typos and grammatical errors must be addressed!) Prefer you address concerns to CCA and not directly to CCAB (keep within chain of command)
