1 AUSTRIA Austria , officially the Republic of Austria , is a republic and a landlocked country of over 8.6 million people in Central Europe. It is bordered by the Czech Republic, Germany , Hungary , Slovakia , Slovenia , Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein . The territory of Austria covers 83,879 square kilometres . Austria's terrain is mainly mountainous, lying within the Alps, only 32% of the country is below 500 metres and its highest point is 3,798 metres. Vienna is by far the country's largest city. Graz is second in size, followed by Linz , Salzburg and Innsbruck .

2 SPORT Due to the mountainous terrain, alpine skiing is a popular sport in Austria. Similar sports such as snowboarding or ski-jumping are also widely popular and Austrian athletes such as Franz Klammer, Toni Sailer, Benjamin Raich & Marcel Hirscher are widely regarded as some of the greatest alpine skiers of all time. Bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton are also popular events . A popular team sport in Austria is football, which is governed by the Austrian Football Association. Austria was among the most successful football playing nations on the European continent placing 4th at the 1934 FIFA World Cup, 3rd at the 1954 FIFA World Cup and 7th at the 1978 FIFA World Cup. However, recently Austrian football has not been internationally successful. It also co-hosted the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship with Switzerland.
