In Bethnal Green in east London, in 1842: Richer people lived to 45, Labourers lived to 16 In Manchester: 57% of all children died before they were 5. Often poor families would live in just one room or possibly a cellar, many children shared a bed, toilets and water pumps were shared by many families. Contagious diseases spread rapidly in the overcrowded and dirty cities of Britain. They spread most rapidly amongst the poor but killed people from all classes. Prince Albert for example who was a great supporter of improving public health died in 1861 from typhoid probably caught from the sewers at Windsor Castle. Key Contagious diseases: Typhoid- bacterial infection- spread by contaminated food/water with faecal matter of an infected person (vaccine 1896) Typhus- bacterial infection- spread by lice or fleas (DDT used to kill lice following WW2) Diarrhoea- passed from person to person or through contaminated food or water Small Pox- See earlier lessons Tuberculosis (consumption)- bacterial infection spread person to person through the air, linked to overcrowding and malnutrition (Vaccination developed widely used after WW2) Scarlet fever- bacterial infection, spread person to person by coughs/ sneezes. Serum to treat it discovered in 1900 Whooping cough- highly contagious bacterial infection, could be fatal to babies/ small children.
