3 In this session… In this session we will consider, ‘how an organisation and its workplaces fit into the world around it’.

4 Agenda Learning Outcomes
Understand sustainability and corporate responsibility: what the terms means, legislation associated with sustainability and environmental issues; Understand the role and responsibility a Facilities Manager has in supporting a corporate responsibility policy; Understand the impact of facilities management on the environment: the range of impacts, how the Facilities Manager can mitigate, reduce or manage the impact of their activities on the environment and new and on-going developments in environmental management; Understand how to manage waste and its safe disposal; Brief explanation to how and why energy used should take into account sustainability; Understand how to improve environmental awareness and responsibility.

1/ Understand the core business; 2/ Understand the buildings; 3/ Classify the services required; 4/ Identify the people needed to manage those services; and 5/ Ascertain the finance required to undertake the tasks.

10 Choices - the 5 Rs Refuse, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Repair.

11 Resources Renewable materials should take precedence over non-renewable ones. Reused or recycled materials or components should take precedence over equivalent 'virgin' elements. Sourcing of materials from areas that are particularly fragile - in respect of their aesthetic, community or ecology should be avoided. Materials with significant reserves remaining should be used in preference to those with smaller reserves. Materials should be used as efficiently as possible and allow for their eventual reuse or recovery – especially where using a material with minimal reserves.

18 Summary The cost of corporate property is the second highest corporate expense after payroll. Understanding organisations and their space requirements can significantly reduce costs, increase productivity and therefore achieve the Triple Bottom Line.
