1 The Power of Taxonomies
Using Tagging to Enhance Content Discoverability & Eliminate Duplication

2 Example 1: Combine Same Lists
Before 1 alphabetical list of courses by Course Name 1 numerical list of courses by JURI Number 3rd incomplete list of courses categorized by “Interest Area” All plain text; lots of room for error between the two lists After New content type for “Courses” with separate fields Added two taxonomies for “Course Types” and “Interests” Pulled all published course nodes into views Enabled searching with sorts and filters for Course name JURI number Course type Interest area

3 Example 2: Combine Different Lists
Before & 1 physical book of writing opportunities 1 plain text list of scholarships 2 different offices handling lists with overlap of student audience After New content type combined due to similar field needs Added taxonomy for “Opportunity Type” (student type before too) Pulled all published nodes of this content type into a single view Enabled searching with sorts, filters and order: Deadline (auto-remove from list when opportunity passes) $ Amount (sort by amount for students interested in greater/lesser options) Opportunity Type (scholarship or writing or both) Link / upload application websites or fillable forms (more difficult before)

4 Example 3: Contact & Directory Views
IDEA STARTED WITH: Before lty-and-staff-contact-information 1 plain text page listing all faculty & staff in HTML table 10 + separate web pages listing department specific contacts 10 + separate blocks added to department specific web pages All versions formatted slightly differently None connected to “Profile” content type which included all the info already anyway! After Added new taxonomy for “Department” Expanded existing taxonomy “Profile Type” Pulled all published “Profiles” into a single view for directory and added Search by department and name options Used department tags to create separate views for each department which previously used varying tables to display contact info Still a work in progress – some departments holding out, others will re-do as we upgrade to Drupal 8 and re-design the site.

5 We’re Getting There… Eventually
Selling people on one more check box, drop-down select, or auto-fill field for their content isn’t as easy as you think! vs. Hesitations for not having total control over layout Even when it means less error and less time for editors Web Upgrade & Redesign in Drupal 8 Perfect opportunity to “sell” departments on improved layout of auto- generated views based on tagging choices Plans to expand current applications PLUS new Landing ”Interest” Pages (views-generated landings which pull together Courses, Faculty, Scholarships, News, Admissions/Academics Content all on one page ex. Public Interest: Using Reference fields to link to entities Ex. linking admin profiles to their faculty member Ex. faculty profile images to related news items Using Taxonomy Access Control to manage content editors
