A naturally occurring, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and a definite chemical composition.
TRANSLATION: it is not made by man, it was never alive, it is a solid and its particles form a repeating pattern. It is always made of the same stuff!

A gem- is a type of gemstone that must be cut or polished for its beauty to be visible.
EVERYTHING is a gemstone. If it needs to be “prettied up”- it’s a gem.
