The Industrial Age Julius Zuke February 26, 2018 REACH! Partnership High School

2 The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution was the transition to new manufacturing processes in the period from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and This transition included going from hand made items to machines, new chemical processes and iron production processes, the increasing use of steam as power, the development of machine toolsand the rise of the factories. Clothing was the dominant industry of the Industrial Revolution in terms of jobs, and the amount of money invested. The clothing industry was also the first to use modern production methods. Cars and appliances were seen more and more as a way to make everyday life easier.

3 Innovations and Inventions of the Industrial Age
Many innovations and inventions were created during the Industrial Age. Three inventions that I believe changed the people of the times are the light bulb, the automobile, and the airplane.

4 The Light Bulb and Work The light bulb made the work day longer, allowing people to get more work done. This was good for business owners, who could keep their stores open longer, but bad for the workers who could now no longer quit work when the sun went down and go home to rest.

5 The Light Bulb and Health and Safety
The light bulb was much safer than candles and lanterns inside of homes. Roads could be lit up, cutting down on crime and making it safer to drive or ride a horse. Unfortunately, having so many lights made it harder for people to sleep at night. People—and birds—could no longer see the stars in big cities. Birds trying to find their way home by using the stars could no loner do so.

6 The Light Bulb and Ethics
While light bulbs made going from place to place safer, it also took away people’s privacy. Thanks to light bulbs, along with cameras, people now know when you bought a hamburger at the drive-through, sped past a speed camera, and hung out at the local store when you were supposed to be doing your homework.

7 The Light Bulb and Culture and Society
As light bulbs became cheaper, they were used to create a party atmosphere at clubs, arcades, and amusement parks. Lights lured people into stores to shop. Christmas lights became a tradition.

8 The Light Bulb and Politics
Everyone wants and needs lights in their homes and businesses. The cost of electricity to power these lights is negotiated through a complicated system of laws and politics. This means that, depending upon who you are and whether or not you own a business helps decide whether you pay a fair price for electric power.

9 The Light Bulb and the Environment
Light bulbs consume a lot of energy. Creating that energy to power light bulbs pollutes our skies and contributes to global warming. The use of LED light bulbs has helped to cut down on the amount of energy needed to power lights.

10 Summary of Light Bulbs As you can see, an invention as simple as a light bulb can quickly make the world a more complicated place. Work Health and safety Ethics Environment Politics Culture and Society

11 Invention #2 that you chose and Work
The light bulb made the work day longer, allowing people to get more work done. This was good for business owners, who could keep their stores open longer, but bad for the workers who could now no longer quit work when the sun went down and go home to rest.
