3 INTRODUCTIONS RE:GENERATION | WORKSHOP 2018

4 video placeholder SESSION ONE | RE:GENERATION VISION

5 - SESSION ONE - VISION re:generation

6 Questions To Consider Is your church at the top of the list of places to seek help for your members? What about people in your community? Is your church a primary care center, triage center, an emergency room, or hospital for those dealing with hurts, habits, or hang-ups? Is your church a safe environment for your staff and members to confess sin and recover from the damage of sin? Who are the people in your church, who know how to help others heal and become spiritually healthy? What is your church strategy to help a hurting world? SESSION ONE | RE:GENERATION VISION

7 Why People Go Elsewhere For Help
“Terminally unique” – there is no one here who struggles like me or knows how to handle my struggles Afraid of being known Pastors/staff don’t have time or don’t want to get ”messy” Church culture is not a safe environment for healing Church does not have the “expertise” SESSION ONE | RE:GENERATION VISION

8 The Result: People Disconnect from Church
Church is not shepherding the flock Missed opportunities for discipleship, care and correction, restoration People are isolated within the church (“No one understands or cares”) Struggling person shares limited info/no accountability Shallow, inauthentic relationships/fellowship (staff and leaders, too) People go to 3rd party counselors Struggling person leaves the church Cut God out of the problem altogether SESSION ONE | RE:GENERATION VISION

9 God’s Plan A: The Church
Scripture tells us to: Bear each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2) Confess to one another, pray, and heal together (James 5:16) Participate in authentic fellowship (1 John 1:7-9) We, the Church, are to shepherd God’s flock by: God’s Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10-16) God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17) God’s People (2 Corinthians 1:3-5) SESSION ONE | RE:GENERATION VISION

10 The Answer To Every Sin Problem: Jesus
We all need recovery in Christ Jesus is the healer working through the Spirit Luke 4:18-19 Matthew 11:28-30 Every sin problem is a symptom of misplaced worship and idolatry. Codependency, pride, insecurity/identity, homosexuality, overspending, addictions to alcohol/substances, guilt and shame, abuse, etc. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. Galatians 5:19-21 SESSION ONE | RE:GENERATION VISION

11 Biblical Principles For Discipleship
Vision: The local church should be where the world turns for healing, hope, and authentic fellowship in Christ Everyone needs recovery in Christ: recovery = discipleship = sanctification Authentic leadership and equipping members to minister to others Culture: Safe place to be known, receive mercy, extend grace, grow, deal with sin together Authentic small groups for us to grow in Christ together Establish environments and tools for healing and equipping (ministries, curriculum, training) SESSION ONE | RE:GENERATION VISION

14 - SESSION TWO - DISTINCTIVES re:generation

15 How is re:generation Different?
Discipleship focus: Full devotion to Christ is our mission. Heart change is more important than behavior modification. “Sobriety” from addiction is not ultimate, it is fruit of our abiding with Christ. The steps of re:generation are rewritten to facilitate biblical sanctification. Daily lessons: Freedom is a product of abiding with Christ. Re:gen provides daily structure to grow in a relationship with God. Scripture memory, daily prayer and community are integrated as critical means of recovery. SESSION TWO | RE:GENERATION DISTINCTIVES

19 How is re:generation Different?
Curriculum uniquely designed to share the gospel, identify idols, facilitate repentance, clarify forgiveness/amends/reconciliation and deal with abuse. Mixed-issue groups: Sinful patterns are symptoms of a worship issue (idolatry). Mixed-issue groups help focus recovery on the heart rather than on behavior and help expose the lie of terminal uniqueness. Integration/participation in the Church: Isolating from/within the Church is unhealthy. We encourage participants to be in community, integrate into church, find mentors, become a member and serve at their church home. SESSION TWO | RE:GENERATION DISTINCTIVES

22 How is re:generation Different?
Living in the light: We confess sin, speak truth in love, walk in repentance, guard against gossip and handle conflict biblically (Mt. 18:15-17). Anonymity and confidentiality are not supported by scripture. Groups are safe environments to share, but are not safe harbors for unrepentant sin. Continuous one-night ministry model: Participants join the ministry on any given week. One-night model allows for interaction of participants at different stages of ministry, increased leadership recruitment, improved leader development and cross-training, ministry training. Classroom and real-time leadership training: Leader training at launch, weekly videos and leader guide for every week of curriculum and inventory training. SESSION TWO | RE:GENERATION DISTINCTIVES

28 100+ Common Struggles and Personal Assessment
Congratulations – just picking this up took courage. Nothing gets better unless you face it…so you’ve already begun the healing process. Before you read the list below, go to a quiet place, pray and ask God to help you see your struggles. Then with a pen in hand, circle the ones that apply to you. And don’t worry if you circle a lot (we all can and did)…and frankly, the more honest you are with yourself and God, the healthier you will be – because healing will flow into all those areas, as God gives grace to the humble. So pray, circle your struggles & give God a year at re:gen! SESSION THREE | RE:GENERATION MINISTRY LEADERSHIP

42 - SESSION SIX - DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT re:generation

43 Development Questions to Consider
What is your current process of caring for and disciplining those who seek help? Is your current process effective? Does your current process achieve the mission of your church? What are your reasons to change what you are doing now? Are you looking for curriculum or a ministry to solve systemic problems of leadership and/or culture? What type of leadership buy-in do you have for change? Do you feel strongly enough about change that you are willing to lose key leaders? SESSION SIX | RE:GENERATION DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT

44 Reasons Not to Change There is no compelling reason to change
As church leaders, we must avoid changing just for the sake of change. We should not "fix" things that are working well just because we are ready for something else. If there is no compelling reason to change, consider postponing the change. Wrong motives When we have a "let's-be-like-that-church" mentality, we can get ourselves into deep trouble. Our motive must be to follow Christ and glorify God in His calling for us (1 Corinthians 10:31) Wrong attitude Change that occurs in the midst of ungodly attitudes will lead to great setbacks. (James 3:16)  SESSION SIX | RE:GENERATION DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT

45 Reasons to Change Only change tools when you are convinced that a change will help to better accomplish the mission. SESSION SIX | RE:GENERATION DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT

46 Preparing for Change Seasons of prayer Examine motives
Consider wise counsel Be ready for resistance and conflict Obtain church leadership buy-in SESSION SIX | RE:GENERATION DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT

47 re:generation Development Phases
PHASE 1: Establish leadership Run a pilot group of potential leaders before launching the ministry church-wide. The goal of the pilot group is to produce male and female leaders who have become familiar with the curriculum before they lead groups of participants. It is common for pilot groups to experience some attrition of potential leaders.  PHASE 2: Launch the ministry The goal of Phase 2 is to open RE:GEN to the church and build toward a year-round ministry. A big group gathering with worship, teaching and testimonies is established. Ongoing Groundwork groups provide an entry point year-round. PHASE 3: Grow the ministry The goal of Phase 3 is to begin to transform church culture, and establish recovery in authentic community as a normal healing process for all members. Sunday sermon series, referrals from church staff, up-front authenticity, and community outreach are common methods of growth. SESSION SIX | RE:GENERATION DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT
